Ah-hah! That drawing explains why states like California have banned the “antennas” used to communicate with Nazi Germany! There is no Nazi Germany any longer! Why spend money in a defunct piece of equipment! Now I see.
I am so grateful that they are saving me money. What a nice place to live...always looking out for me...

"The shoulder thing that goes up" -- I think the consensus in the gun world about what former Rep. Carolyn McCarthy meant when she coined this phrase is wrong. It has to be the folding shoulder rest, as found on the M14 rifle and the M1918A2 BAR. That's fine. Defining "assault rifles" by this characteristic is a dead end. Hardly any modern guns have this feature.

Ah, but that fundamental level of ignorance by politicians is a constant, and remains an existentential threat to our liberty, so, we must need not exclude that item of ridicule from our "toolbox."

Also, there is some debate, that the former Representative may have been referring to a folding shoulder stock like that found on the SPAS. Sadly, none of the parties involved are qualified to answer the question at a recognized level of technical expertise.

I could buy that. However, my understanding of the consensus in the gun world is that "the shoulder thing that goes up" is a barrel shroud. A barrel shroud has nothing to do with the shoulder, and it doesn't go up. It's a mystery how "the shoulder thing that goes up" got associated with a barrel shroud.

Forrest Gump defined it quite well; Stupid is as stupid does.

How it got associated can be seen in this interview excerpt: As for WHY, well, I defer to TikkaShooter on that one.

She answered “shoulder thing that goes up” when she was asked to define what a barrel shroud was...a term she wrote into her own legislation, trying to make it a Federal felony to possess one.

She wasn’t thinking of a shoulder rest; she didn’t know enough about guns to know which end the barrel is on.
