Must be that time of the month again because I have another dumb question. Actually, Numrich came up with this idea. I have a J Stevens model 54 410ga bolt action shotgun with no Bolt Assembly. I have looked high and wide but no luck. I do have a J Stevens model 37B bolt Assembly. It could be made to fit the model 54 by changing the bolt head. Except for one thing. When the Assembly is inserted into the receiver the cocking piece contacts the receiver before the bolt handle can lock down. Numrich idea is to cut a groove inside the receiver for the cocking piece. Does that sound like an idea that could actually work. Photos may give you an idea of what I'm saying.

General rule in gunsmithing is work on the cheapest part. This way your your not out a major expense or making it where it's not repairable.

How much does it lack to closing? Can you file on the lug?

Sorry Guys. I've decided it's not going to work. There would be problems with cocking the gun and the safety. I've been looking for that dang bolt assembly so long that I started grasping at straws I guess. I'll keep looking. Anybody happen to have a Stevens model 54 or 37 410ga bolt assembly in their pocket?

Keep watching on Ebay and Numrich would be my best guess--on the ebay stuff, you have to know what you are looking for as folks get confused sometimes when posting. You might also look for a parts gun on Gunbroker maybe with a ruined barrel or a law enforcement cut-receiver gun. You can set up automated alerts from Numrich and Ebay as well.

Also try Bob's Gun Parts in Royal, Arkansas. He has a bunch of parts for some pretty old stuff but is definitely low tech in handling orders.

Have you tried Lee's Gun parts , (972) 790-0773 ‬?

He's only open 3 days a week and can be hard to reach. Hours 9 - 5 Tues., Wed., Thurs. He's a 1 man operation so if he's pulling parts the phone just keeps ringing.

I've tried everywhere. I have ads on armslist in half the states and add a couple more every day. I start looking on the internet first thing everyday and the last thing every night. I have post on all the gun forums I can find. Nothing, But I'm on a quest. I've made up my mind. I'm going to find that dang bolt.

Gunbroker has a current listing for a JC Higgins, (Sears and Roebuck ), made by Stevens. Probably not your gun model, Sears sold a lot of guns one of their 410 models could be yours, rebadged

That's the problem. There are so many that look the same. Even numrich list the stevens 37,37b, 54 and 54b as all the same. But they are not. I have the 37b and it will not work. I far as I find out only the 37 and 54 bolt bodies are the same. The 37, 54, 37b, 39a, 59a, 59b and more all look pretty much the same. Then you have all the sears, western auto and others that are very close. I guess that there may be others that could work but I can't find a for sure. There is very little info out there on this gun. About all I can find is that this gun was made between 1933 and 1942. There was only around 23000 54s and 29000 37s made. Stevens made so many models with no serial numbers and erratic model numbers. And from what i read when Savage bought Stevens they destroyed most of their records. I paid $80 for the 37b because numrich said it would work. I can't afford to make that mistake many more times. When I told numrich they were wrong thats when they said I needed a groove cut in the receiver. Numrich is even giving the wrong schematic. I have the correct one. Oh well, like I say. I'm on a quest now.
