How long is the magazine plug for a Remington 1100 12 gauge?
A friend needs a hunting gun and mine is unplugged for 3-gun.
Maybe a local store has one but if not I can just cut a dowel.

My 1100 is chambered for 2 3/4" shells. I have two plugs for the magazine: a plastic 5 5/8" that says Remington 1100 on it and a 6 1/2" wooden one that's 6 1/2". Either one prevents putting more than two 2 3/4" shell in the mag.
I think the wooden one may have come from Dad's 1937 Rem model 31.

Depends on the ammo capacity. Take the capacity, subtract the number to which you want to reduce that capacity and measure the number of shells that are left. That's your plug length. Doesn't make any difference what model shotgun it is.

Just be aware that a 2 3/4" shell's overall length can vary a bit before they are fired depending on the crimp style. They are 2 3/4" after firing them. Before you fire them they are roughly 2 1/2", +/- some. And if you're also wanting to fire 3" shells getting the plug the right length needs to be pretty precise. If you can just barely fit two 3" shells in the magazine you're probably OK. But if you have much room left over with two 3" shells you might be able to squeeze three 2 3/4" shells in the magazine with some brands of shells. And that could get you fined even if you don't have 3 loaded.

I've cut a few, including one made from a tree branch I whittled down to fit while in a dove field. I had forgotten to put the plug in my gun and had to make one before getting in trouble. I'd advise cutting a little longer than necessary and use the trial and error method to shorten it some as you check for fit.

Most gun shops carry factory made plugs for most popular models or at least they used to. I have a few laying around for Remington 1100 and 870 that once you took off the cap, they just dropped in and you didn't have to remove the spring holder and when you removed them just take the cap off and they fell out. Nothing wrong with using a wood dowel, but sometimes it requires taking the spring holder out etc and it can get aggravating.

I'll check a couple of places tomorrow but the coat hanger is sounding good.

A section of plastic coat hanger works.
