I always thought Horn was railroaded.
He may have been.. But he was a psychopathic killer. One of the nice things about the Tom Horn Steve Mcqueen movie, Is that Steve Mcqueen refused to do the movie until Tom Horn was made the hero... Another plus for the Tom Horn Steve Mcqueen movie, they did bring back into the limelight the Winchester 1873. :)

In Buffalo Wyoming they have a Nice little museum with lots of info on Tom Horn and the Johnson County War.

Just one more plus for this little Museum, When we visited they had a raffle to raise money for the Museum. The raffle Prize a Uberti western replica pistol.
I love Wyomians ...

Wasn't an 1873, it was an 1866. In 40-82, I believe.

I was going from the book and some historical notes. Could almost swear there was an 86 in the movie at some point. I must be wrong. Happening more lately.

I will ask this before I have to go look it up, but I disremember that when Mr Horn tried his escape he armed himself with an automatic pistol of some kind, be could not make it work... Any backing for that???

I never knew which rifle he actually used in the movie, but unless I'm mistaken he refers to himself using a 40-60 in the movie. I'm paraphrasing because I don't recall the exact line, but when questioned about shooting the boy he says he is shooting a 40-60 with a trajectory like a rainbow. And if he had shot the boy, it would have been the best shot he had ever made.

Interesting stuff here regardless.

Just sharing this, came across this looking for something else but it seems in 1979, the year before Steve Mcqueens Tom Horn came out, David Carradine did a tom Horn movie called "Mr Horn".. Never saw it will watch it tonight.. but its free out there on the Tube of yous channel..

I worked on a ranch near Buffalo WY.

In addition to visiting the museum check out Fort Phil Kearny and walk the ground at the Fetterman Massacre site where Crazy Horse lured eighty men into a lethal trap. The 80 repeaters they carried would be used against Custer not far to the north.

The massacre was the reason for Portugee Phillips famous ride for help.
What many don't know is that he was aided by John Jonston (the "Crow Killer" who was the basis of the film Jeremiah Johnson) for much of the ride.

Pretty interesting. A friend of writes historical novels under the pen Name "Zeke Crandall." I have a book of his on Tom Horn. I'll look it up.
