Ruger Mark IV Uppers

And the FFL talked to his lawyers & they said it is a pistol. So that’s how it got transferred.
Wow. Did they actually look at the federal definition of “pistol”?. Part of the requirement is for it to have “a short stock designed to be gripped by one hand at an angle to and extending below the line of the bore(s)”. A MkIV receiver doesn’t have that because it’s not a pistol, it’s a receiver. Or heck, they don’t even need to bother looking up the law, they just need to read the instructions on the 4473.

Oh well, I guess it doesn’t make any difference on your end. Glad it fits! Hope it shoots well too. Let us know!

I don't have a clue what his lawyers looked at for guidance. I didn't ask for details of the conversation, only the end result. I did ask who he uses for legal work, and he apparently uses FFL Guard. They basically told him "once a pistol, always a pistol." He also said he had called Volquartsen about this and they also told him it was a pistol for transfer purposes.

It really didn't make a difference at my end. It's his FFL on the line if it gets messed up, and he was comfortable with the advice given to him by his counsel. I'm good with it.

Function test result: Flawless operation

Approximately 40 rounds of Winchester (Hyper X?) and 20 rounds of CCI Stingers. I had 1 dud Winchester, but it fed, fired, and ejected every other round without so much as a hiccup.

So, for posterity, let me make this clear:
A Ruger Mark IV Target upper (which is what these appear to be) will fit and will function on a Ruger Mark IV 22/45 Lite lower.

Awesome! Good to know, especially if I decide to piece together another Ruger Mk-series pistol in the future. My cobbled-together Mkiii is my favorite pistol to shoot. Of course, the fact that I only shoot it with my silencer doesn’t hurt. Dead Air Masks for the win, right Spats!?

Absolutely! There's a pretty good chance that my new upper will wind up threaded, too.

Wow, that's not correct at all.

It's been covered in another active thread here right now.

You can go pistol, rifle, pistol, all day long.

However you can't go rifle, pistol, rifle.

Real life example. I just built a 300 Blackout pistol. If I want to change the upper and possibly the brace I can change it into a rifle, if I then change my mind I can go back to pistol.

This is possibly the dumbest question I've ever asked, but I assume these won't work on MKII/III lowers, right? The pivot point eyesore and the unnecessary ez-disassembly system aren't simply additions to the MKIII receiver, right?

I don't have a definitive, citable source, but I would not expect them to fit. That pivot point, which the MKIII obviously lacks, might throw off the geometry, but it also leads me to believe that there may be other differences in the frame.

^^^^^^^^ Yah! That. The mounting/attachment to the grip frame is completely different between the Mark II & III pistols and the Mark IV style with it's "hinging style" method of attachment. So, the answer is NO, it's Mark IV compatible only.

Also, if the MKIV frame is not compatible with older uppers, it stands to reason that the MKIV upper is not compatible with older frames.
That would be logical. However there’s a small possibility that they left the upper the same and just added the machining for the pivot point.

in some cases uppers are one way compatible on other platforms.
It’s a long shot but I’d like a confirmation

That would be logical but it’s still not an answer based on actual experience. I understand that you can’t put a previous gen upper on a MKIV frame. But maybe they left the mating surfaces and the hole for the takedown pin in the same place as before to save processes or something. I’m 99.99% sure it won’t work but if any of you have both platforms would you mind trying a MKIV upper on a MKIII frame real quick?

Geez, you're not asking for much, are you? I just happen to have EVERY platform that Ruger made since 1949 concerning the Ruger Mark pistols. No, I sure ain't gonna try what you request, only because it WILL NOT work. I bought two of those Mark IV uppers as sold by Volquartsen, so I know, up close and personal, just by looking at these uppers that they will NOT work. But, I would suggest you actually buy one of the Mark IV uppers and try the fit yourself, as that seems to be the only way you will trust the knowledge and experience you seek.
