What are your thoughts about this for a fun gun for plinking and pretending you have an actual AR? I live in the state of Massachusetts so scary black guns are restricted and cost three to four times more than anywhere else. I was thinking of getting the M&P for my wife for christmas. Seems like all the parts are replicated fairly well, so we would know how an actual AR functions for when we get the heck out of here. Thanks Pete

I picked one up used earlier this summer, and it was a total dog. The extractor was missing and the trigger wouldnt reset properly. It was also in the recall and hadnt been updated. Sent it back to S&W three times before they got tired of me and sent me a brand new one.

That one has been great, and 100%. So far, its run fine on anything Ive put in it. Fun little guns when they work. :)

I bought one last Black Friday for around $299 and it has ran fine for nearly 1,000 rounds. At that time it was the closet thing to an AR in .22 lr for a reasonable price.

I own a .22 Umarex A4 version. It resembles an AR but is cheaply built. It is picky on brand of ammo it likes. The S&W version may be better though. Also if you have MAG restrictions see if a low cap one is available before you buy. Mine is a 30 rounder. FWIW a Ruger 10-22 would be a better choice for a plinking .22 but it is not styled like an AR.

I had one for a while and felt it was mediocre. Accuracy was so-so and the trigger sucked. But if you want a 22 that looks and functions as much like an AR as possible I think it is the best of the bunch in that regard. But I have several AR's, ammo is not that expensive and I'd just rather have the real thing.

I have the Walther made, Colt brand AR22. On sale they go for $299.
It has been a joy if you like .22LR plinking. It has not been ammo sensitive but I stick with
a few brands that has always worked in all my .22s. I bought this one for my wife, and she loves it, but I find
myself shooting it more than she does. It is the AR design but the FA does not function.

I have one and it’s a hoot with a Nikon A22 scope. We regularly shoot golf balls at 50 yards and the kids have a blast doing it at 25 yards. Fun shooters, but buy a bunch of mags and the McFadden loader.

It's a great choice for what you want to do. Mine has been 100% and very accurate out to 100 yards. I actually scoped it for a while and it was a hoot at those longer ranges but I've since gone back to irons and plinking.

My wife has had hers for years. We pound the rounds of out it. Cycles every ammo we load in the mag. Only ammo it would not cycle was some subsonic stuff (wouldnt cycle in anything)

i highly recommend one. I need to get another for myself as hers is the pink camo

AK: I really hate to say this, but if you really want a good-shooting .22LR, get a 10-22 Deluxe, not a hoked-up attempt at a "black rifle" designed for a 14-year old kid. Later, you can get a sexy bull, fluted barrel for it and it will be a really fun rifle to last you into your 60s.

I bought an M&P 15-22 in May of 2018 for my daughter's 10th birthday. Within the first 100 rounds the trigger pin walked out. It could have just been assembled wrong, but I bought a anti-walk kit to be safe and the gun's run like a top since then for thousands of rounds. I've never bench tested it for accuracy, but it's plenty good enough for plinking and it certainly doesn't seem inaccurate. I have a SIG 522 which is my .22 chambered "black rifle". The SIG feels more like a "big boy gun" since it's balanced the same as the SIG 556. But I'm sometimes a little jealous of the lightness of my daughters M&P, and more than once I've considered selling the SIG and picking a 15-22 up for myself.

The 15-22 seems to need to be cleaned out a little more often than my 10/22 or it'll stop cycling, but it also seems to run a little longer than my Model 60 will between cleanings, so that's not really a problem. Rough guess, her 15-22 needs the action cleaned every 2,000 or so rounds shooting Golden Bullets. And being a copy of the AR15, it's far easier to strip and clean than either of the other two .22's.

Totally agree, and this comes from someone who owns a 15-22.

My 15-22 is the most fun gun I own. Mine was one of the early ones without any muzzle device or threading, so I purchased an "add-on" thread from Tacticool to be able to use the suppressor with it.

OP, I don’t own any M&P carbines but of all the folks I know who own them, most ran great without issues. One guy I know had a 5.56 M&P Sport that had issues that he had to work out.

Ive owned a number of 10-22's over the years, and just recently got rid of the last one, which Ive had since the 80's. They are about the only Rugers I havent had some sort of issue with, and like. All were good shooters. They all outshot the 77/22 I had, that cost about three times as much.

This 15-22 I have now seems to shoot just as well as the 10-22's I had. But thats just based on blasting with it, I havent tried to actually shoot it in any serious manner.

I got the first 15-22 used, for a pretty good deal, and in the long run, Ive actually made out. Got a brand new gun that works, a couple of extra mags, and a nice Nikon 22 BDC scope between the two.

As long as the S&W keeps going like it is now, it'll be fine. Its really not a " hoked-up attempt at a "black rifle" designed for a 14-year old kid", its a pretty close scale AR in 22 that handles and shoots like one. Mossberg gets the honors for your description. :)

I have a little red dot on mine and its a blast to shoot.

Earlier this year, my son picked up a nice used 10-22 takedown with a bull barrel for a great price from the same place I got the 15-22. Its a nice gun, and its now wearing that Nikon scope. Im not real big on their takedown guns, but his seems to shoot OK.

Ive seen some good deals of late on the 10-22's, both new and used, but I keep passing. Right now, the 15-22 is more along the lines of most of what I have floating around in the bigger calibers, and just keeps things simple. As long as it keeps working.

I do not think they are a safe or well designed rifle. Too many out of battery discharges. That can happen with any 22 auto but happens way to much with the m&p.

I bought one a year ago, and it's one of my favorite guns. It's a tack driver at 100 yds, and ammo is .03 cents a round. Luckily Thunderbolt tested as well as CCI SV, and is a penny less per round. Mine got a bit more accurate when I dropped in a CNC trigger that I scored for $100.. I also have a Nikon Prostaff BDC scope. I can hit a 7 inch target at 200 yds.. BUT if you get one, you need one of these: http://www.mcfaden.com/mobile/Product.aspx?ProductCode=LIGHTNIN-GRIP

And this: http://www.mcfaden.com/mobile/product.aspx?ProductCode=mp15-22adapteronly&404;http://www.mcfaden.com:80/product-p/mp15-22adapteronly.htm=

With this loader I can load 25 rounds in the mags in less than 5 seconds. I use the loader and the various adapters for all 4 of my 22lr training guns.

Another point-Using 22lr training guns has saved me hundreds in 5.56 and 9mm they will pay for themselves quickly when you are learning different platforms/techniques. I have been practicing Draw/Fire. After some instruction, and 4k 22 rounds ($120), My instructor said I've got it down. Had I shot 9mm, it would've cost around $700 for that ammo. BANG! I JUST PAID FOR MY 22 PISTOL TRAINING GUN, AND MY CARRY PPQ M2 SC!

Same story for my AR. After enough trigger/breathing technique training with my MP 15-22, it was paid for including the scope and dropin trigger, and now I can shoot rifles. I only started shooting 7 mos. ago-saving all that money allowed for more guns, and more practice. Learned the Training gun concept here, and I'm glad I bought into it! THANKS HIGHROAD MEMBERS!

Wait a minute- Did you just say black "Scary" guns cost 3-4 times more where you live? ***!!?? Time to move to AZ. We'll open carry all day, and go to the range.

We are working on it. My wife and I are victims of Massachusetts. This state is trying its best to be crazier than California. We turn on the news each morning just to see what crazy new law will be passed. Our goal is to move to Montana in about four and half years. We are trying to retire by the time we hit ages 57.

And yes, three to four times more. A typical AR-15 is $1600. And that is for a used gun. Limited of course to a ten round mag, unless you can find a magazine that was manufactured prior to 1994 (I think). Those mags will cost you $40 each.

Plastic straws are illegal in parts of our state, looks like a statewide ban on plastic bans are coming. Menthol cigarettes and flavored vaping is about to become illegal, but we are opening marijuana shops as fast as possible. One local Town just lowered the legal voting age to 16. But it took us ten years to pass a cell phone usage law while driving because the law was considered racist. The compromise was that the police will monitor the race of the people they pull over to determine if cell phone usage while driving is race related. I guess the theory is that only white people can afford bluetooth. Sorry for going off the rails a bit, but sometimes it feels good to let some of this stuff out.

Back on topic; I ordered the gun. I think my wife will really enjoy it. It will compliment my 357 Henry Big Boy when we set up the steel plates at out local club. Someday we will have an AR chambered in 223/556. In the meantime we will just pretend :)

My god what a miserable place. I didn't think anywhere was as bad as California. Just make it till you get to montana! It's fantastic there.

I think you will really enjoy it. It's a lot of fun to shoot steel targets rapidly with it yet it is still accurate at distance. It will give you lots of fun options.

??????

5-6 thousand rounds through mine. No problems.

The Appleseed guys banned them from their classes them a while back due to the out of battery issue. I've never had one, but there's been reports.

I've never had an issue with mine over thousands of rounds either. IF you're looking for a trainer for the AR15, IMHO the M&P 15-22 is a great option. Mine's reasonably accurate, and digest just about everything I've run through it. I set mine up similar to my HD AR and use it for workig with younger/inexperienced AR shooters before transitionng to a 9mm AR, then the real thing.

It's also just flat out fun and is a big hit whenever I have kids come out to shoot:
