Killer Texas hogs attack woman in Anahuac

I was seriously getting ready to post this. Is that not crazy? Guess people can’t say hogs won’t attack you anymore. But I wish there was video of it for documentation.

Seems very unlikely....but who knows. Something more plausible would be the woman succumbed to a health issue/accident and the hog(s) came along later.

Maybe some follow up story will shed more light on it.

Very sad to read about.

I don't think Hogs are a top menace to human life but from what I have heard and watched they do appear to be a major ecological menace. It kind of makes me reflect on what will be left of the natural world in 50 years. Maybe hogs will inherit the earth along with the cockroaches.

Coroners report will determine if the bites were postmortem

County medical examiner's office formally ruled the cause of death as "exsanguination due to feral hog assault."

I agree with flint knapper, but instead of "succumbed" it may simply have been that she was incapacitated. A stroke, diabetes, or something else could've caused her to collapse, but not dead, and the hogs came along, and finished her off. She was found between the house and her car, in the front yard, so it's not as though she was walking through a large area and the hogs came up on her as she crossed the gap. I don't think she would have parked and gotten out if a hog or two were wandering around in the yard...I don't know maybe she would, thinking the hogs wouldn't harm her, and ooops.

I agree with Loonwulf as to my own situation. We're out in the woods and pigs roam at will and it good numbers. I've shot 'em out of my yard before. But, it's small acreages out here of 5 to more acres mostly, up to about 50. They do get shot a lot by humans and pigs seem to be wary of humans. Pig attacks on humans is very rare. I think the article says only three have happened.

I'm thinking she may not have noticed them when she got out of her car and unwittingly come between a sow and her piglets, unknowingly cornered some of them, or something like that. I'm inclined to doubt she would have knowingly walked in amongst them if she had known they were there. Having a hard time believing they would have attacked her unprovoked.

Maybe fuller details will come out later.

Walking in a forested wilderness park, a passel of wild hogs (two huge mommas and zillions of piglets) ran across our trail. Luckily, they were moving at speed and ignored us. Now would 5 be enough? Glock 19 on the hip but not presenting any gun/pig fantasy scenario.

Good friend had a pig trap at his ranch. Caught a boar and decided to release him for reasons I don't remember. Anyway, he opens the gate from behind. The boar exits, pivots and charges him. He was carrying a pump gun and pushed it forward and by chance caught the boar in the snout. Boar turned and ran away. It was exciting.

I got between a sow and her pigs while turkey hunting and had to take a quick trip to the emergency room for 20+ stitches.
One other time I was charged and managed to do a 'leap-frog' over the hog. Luckily it continued on its way rather than turning around and trying again. I was unarmed (and unharmed) that time.

I have been around these feral hogs for quite awhile, I would much rather encounter a black bear while hunting than a feral hog of 100 lbs or more. These critters ain't nothing to mess with, they will maim or kill you with the cutters in their mouth. They are mean, have a mean streak. There needs to be a war on feral pigs, the only way to control them is to poison them all. Now that I live in Tn. they are going to destroy the mountains as they will start erosion by their rooting. If you get a shot at one, shoot, and like a bad guy, double tap if in doubt.

Except that the ME already determined death was by exsanguination.

With that said, my money is on the hogs scavenging an unconscious woman who apparently suffered a head injury when she fell. Otherwise, I cannot imagine 1) that she was attacked by hogs in the short distance between her car and the front door, 2) that she was attacked on her way to the door and NOBODY heard her screaming, 3) that she would have been attacked on the way to the door and never screamed.

By and large, hogs do not attack people unprovoked

Well the sows are more of biters than slicers. Mature boars tend to be slicers and not biters, so much, but certainly can bite. In my last 10 years of hunting hogs and killing hundreds of them, can't say that I have ever noticed any behavior that would indicate to me that they are mean or have a mean streak. By and large, they either ignore humans or run from them. Every time that I have encountered hogs in the wild unexpectedly, it is the hogs that have run.

When it comes to unprovoked attacks, deer are more dangerous than hogs and deer attacks kill more people than hog attacks.

I can’t say I have ever been “attacked” by any but I had the tusk of one slice open the side of my bluejeans when a buddy helped me load it into the back of a pickup. I have also seen that I would not want to be in a trap with them or between what they perceive as freedom vs confinement.

That said, I bet more people die from otherwise “friendly” dogs, annually in the USA.

Actually, I've never been attacked by a human, either, but I carry a gun just in case. :D Same gun is there if I encounter a hog.

I had my .38 snubby on the way home when I came across a pig digging up the pasture next to us. I shot from about 50 yards braced. It hit him somewhere. I was aiming for the shoulder. He may be still out there rooting up my place. LOL! .357 is the most powerful gun that I routinely carry concealed for human predators. I've taken several pigs with one, even one charging me after a shot too far back with a rifle failed to stop him and I blood trailed him through thick brush, and put down more in the trap. I have confidence in it with a properly placed shot. The .38 might do it, too, at danger close range with good bullet placement, but I'd rather have my .357 in case I need more penetration. :D

I saw this story headlined on the Yahoo page too, but I clicked on "Hailey Baldwin Seen in Latest Beach Fashion of High Heels and a Thong" instead.

She has such a skinny neck.

I could certainly see an unseen hog attacking out here. It's 30 yards to the front door from my truck and there are no neighbors to hear the commotion. The guy across the road is on 30 acres or more and his house is way off the road.

See, the good thing is, I'm never unarmed. :D Now, I don't think of my sidearm in terms of hog defense, but it should work.to at least run the pig off even if I missed. I know when I shoot at a pack of hogs, I rarely have a chance to get off another round even with a semi-auto SKS that I hunt with. They bug the heck out after a shot and don't show back up again, generally.

Made me go back and click the link again, and I don’t even know who that is, got the hog story again...

Reports of various animals attacking humans were revealed and outlined as elements of a vast conspiracy on the Bob & Tom show years ago. Expect more of these kinds of stories.

Who the hell is "Bob and Tom" and what makes them experts? :D

I do know how mean pigs can get when they're trapped or cornered, having seen such behavior myself first hand, and I won't just poo faw such stories, especially as documented by law enforcement and reported by local news. Do I worry about going into the woods?....uh, NO. I kill a lot of pigs for food and fun. They ain't back there plotting to take me out, I'm pretty sure.
