Handgun hunting revolver

I had a DW in 357 Max several years ago, and it was a very accurate revolver that took several deer for me out to 85 yards in one case. In a fit of stupidity, I sold it to my brother-in-law. I have tried to buy it back several times at even more than what he gave me for it but he won't part with it. I kick myself to this day.

Robhof,

that is on fine looking gun you've got there!

Love a good blued gun, and those Pachmayr presentation grips sure make it more comfortable to shoot.

I switched entirely to a 2x Leupold scoped SRH in 480 Ruger. Got a 6.5" BFR in 475/480 (with red dot) and that was about the time I developed the tic caused red meat allergy (alpha gal). I stopped hunting a year of so later. Prior to the SRH, I used 8 3/8" S&W M57 (41 mag), but I never scored with that handgun. I stopped caring IF I scored before switching to a revolver and it all became about the hunt and not the score. Hunting was the objective and not the kill. It just got a little unchallenging with a my M700 BDL 270 in the woods. Would love to do a hog hunt or a trophy whitetail hunt, but I would have to start practicing a lot again as I am very rusty with the big bore handguns since the allergy developed. I hunt more with a camera now. Don't even need a license for that. :D

I still feel that the 480 Ruger is the way to go for whitetail hunts with a revolver if you keep shots under 100 yds. But I still love the my M57 and what it can do.

22-rimfire,

I'll put you on our prayer list if you don't mind? And I do hope and pray that you get better.

Personally, the 480 is one of the very few handgun cartridges I have never fired.

The year Ruger came out with the Super Redhawk in 454 Casull, I snatched one up, put a scope on it and enjoyed it for a couple of years till I let a friend talk me out of it. Big mistake on my part!

That particular 454 Casull could do more at 200 yards, than what a 44 magnum could do at 100 yards, and it was unbelievably accurate for a revolver.

Now days with old age creeping up on me with arthritis, I cannot enjoy the big bores like I used to, but a good 44 magnum with a muzzle brake is still a pleasure to shoot. I don't know if it's the powder used or the shorter barrels, but a muzzle brake on a revolver is not deafening like what it is on a rifle, so I'll keep enjoying my hunting handguns as long as I can.

I read about the 480 SRH when it first came out a lot. Got one. I wanted a revolver I could easily scope and a bit more power than the 41 mag. At first shooting the 480 hurt (grip adjustment took care of that) and I know the 454 would hurt more from the SRH. That's why I got the BFR and I love that revolver. It runs like a clock. It is as close to a custom big bore revolver that I will get. I'm not driven any more in this regard.

You adjust with the allergy and mine was never as severe as ones I have read about. Yes, it could kill you. But you adapt your diet and life goes on. Our barbacue grill use sure dropped off a lot after getting this.;) But I can still eat pork, so there is still barbacue (just not beef). They say that if you don't feed the allergy that it will slowly go away.... they say..... pretty much a life changing event. Yes, I like Burger King's Impossible Burger.
