buckshot vs buckshot

all five...I would blame the vagrancies of shot-shells more than anything. I am very open to those more knowledgable....

regardless, I feel comfortable for containing body hits at 15 yards - IF I do my part....

I feel 1B and 4B are absolutely fine for home defense. I like variety and though not as efficient as consolidating to a standard, it does provide flexibility (at least in my mind).

My 20" barrel 590 is usually loaded with either #1 buck or #4. My 10" barrel Pro S is loaded with 000 buck.
If I could only choose one load for all my shotguns, I might well be 00B.

Will these really account for any real difference in terminal ballistics against a home assailant? Unlikely. However, such logic keeps my mind occupied and that's a good thing. When I get bored, I do stupid things instead. Ask my wife.

That will do .... nicely. Great to see a perfect defender without any bells and whistles. Every time I see a "tactical" shotgun I just cringe...

what issue do you take with tactical shotguns? I ask because my current bad times rig is identical to Garandimal’s. I’m thinking of picking up a dedicated defensive gun as I don’t want to lose my bird gun to an evidence locker in the admittedly unlikely event I have to use it in a defensive shooting.

I’m eyeing the mossberg 590A1 with the ghost ring and optics rail. I’d be interested to hear what you think the shortcomings of such a rig are as you have real world defensive shotgunning experience.

You know, I am back and forth on this, tbh. My AR15 is stock. Nothing was added to it that Stag didnt stick on it. My shotguns tend to be about the same. Maybe an elastic butt cuff.

However, when I went to buy a new HD gun I elected to go with the 590A1 Retrograde. Mostly because I love the wood and old school look. I bought it to retire my old Ithaca 37 DSPS. Do I need the thicker wall, metal trigger guard, ghost rings, heat shield and bayonet lug? Nah. A Maverick 88 probably would outlast my needs, but man all that stuff looks cool, and the solid walnut sock soaks up recoil like crazy.

My late father in law bought my mother in law a Persuader shortly before he died. 18" barrel, telescoping stock, black furniture. Looks a little out of place on a 70 year woman's HD gun...then again, it's been sitting in her closet for 10 years with the cable lock threaded through the action. She lost the key to it 9 years ago, and I think he bought her some light bird shot to feel the thing. Lotta good all that persuasion its gonna do in it's current form:p

I would say to get whatever fits your needs. Wood or plastic. Fixed or telescoping. Butt cuff or a couple of shells betwixt your teeth. A shotgun is good medicine for a lot of ills.

Nothing is wrong with a shotgun setup the way you want it. Right now my HD shotgun is a 20" Maverick 88. Hiviz fiber optic bead sight, elastic butt cuff with 5 more shells, flashlight mounted just in front of the pump, and sling. "Tacticool" to some, practical to me.

thinking about adding a small rail to the fore-stock to add a regular TLR of sorts. this is as tactical as I need a shotgun to be. Mossberg 930Tactical.JPG

For defense, I really would like to see a purpose built shotgun using mini shells. The 00 buck gives you near 40 S&W double tap performances with each pull of the trigger, greater capacity, and less risk down range...sounds good to me...

20 gauge 20" Cylinder Choke 1100, 20 pellet # 3 Buckshot 2 3/4" Remington, 15 yards. 20's are wild. Don't shoot me with it please.

Shotguns are amazingly versatile. Mine has #4 buck in the mag, 000 buck in a carrier on the stock, and slugs in a side-saddle. Train to select the desired round given the circumstances.

when I was a deputy sheriff there were both an AR and a Mossberg 500 mounted overhead in the truck. I normally grabbed ole mossy first when a long gun was indicated.

I'm of that same old school. With my 870 and the 1100 I recently did over for my wife. It's above in post # 65. To me at least, that other stuff is just in the way.

In any event, no matter how likely or unlikely, the evidence room is usually where the firearm will end up. So, no matter what one plans to use make certain it is reliable and inexpensive.

Look at the picture labnoti posted and ignore the total depth in gel. At 10 to 15" cm or ~3.9" to ~5.9" into a human; the height of the pattern will flat put someone down; if not out.
Although the graph is at muzzle velocity; how much will it lose at indoor distances? Beats me; however, I wouldn't want to be at the receiving end 10' away..

Discontinued: Federal Flight Control #1 Buckshot.

Bummer, that’s some good stuff right there!

Yes, that 15 x .286" pellets at 1100 fps, (30 inch industry standard test barrel), was an exceptional defensive load.

The 33 grain pellets combined with the Flite-Control wad launched at subsonic velocities was perhaps the best combination of pattern, penetration and low recoil in a defensive 12 gauge load.

Unfortunately, it was also the best kept "open secret" in modern shotshell marketing!

So we do some variation of this thread every few months a keep this link handy (I personally either shot, or witnessed the shot as we did all the testing at work):

reference using birdshot (admittedly 7 1/2) for HD/SD

So testing between a cylinder bore and IC choke with some premium SD/HD ammo:

I can't find the pictures at the moment, but we actually saw an improvement in going to a shorter barrel (14") that was cylinder barreled with flight control.

Cringe all you want but my 1187 has the works, butt cuff, side saddle, ghost ring, high vis follower, Surefire light.

I first load a magnum (the greater recoil reminds me under pressure that I just ran dry) then six #1 buck, but I carry some specialty rounds in the saddle and cuff.
Anybody ever hear of "Agitator" riot control rounds?
I had a gf that used birdshot for HD because she couldn't handle the recoil of buck. The idea being that at close range it creates a rat-hole wound, quite effective.
