M1 Garand - Chambered in .270 WCF or 6.5x55 SE...?

Anyone got a lead on 7x57 Mauser Barrels?
A 6.5, 7, and a .270 would all make good Garand.
Prefer the 7mm myself, but would enjoy one in each.

Came across a thread at the CMP forum RE:

6.5x55 SE Garand project.

Said Criterion made the Bbl.

So I went lookin'.

Didn't find it, so it must have been a custom job, but I did find this:

M1 GARAND BARREL, 270 WIN - $245.50

Now, as most that know me will attest to, my prime bolt hunting rifles are all chambered in .270 Win., and my Battle Rifle of choice is the M1 Garand.

But a 150 gr. SP (or 140 gr. TSX) .270 WCF from a 24" M1 Garand?

...or even a 140 gr. SP 6.5x55 M1 Garand.

Should make a dandy field rifle.

Am I wrong about this?

Heck, if you're gonna change the caliber, why not go whole hog?

I can't stand to see an ORIGINAL Garand altered, they could end up like the 1903 Springfield, sport type set up,
rechambered, restocked, until all the history is gone from one.
Yet the 1903 even in such condition is still interesting in those conditions but only if a real pro job, so many
are GARAGE jobs.
But to me the GARAND in original condition is sacred in whatever real condition it has become.
Just my opinion.
The new Garands from the New Springfield, they are ok to alter of chamber of course, they do come in a
couple of calibers don't they?

I don't see anything wrong with modifying one of those old welded together from de-milled receiver parts Franken-guns from the 1950s and early 1960s, once the receiver has been carefully inspected. In fact, going with a milder round might be the best way to go - especially if the gun passes through your hands and into the hands of an unsuspecting future shooter... .

How has the Ruger been treating you? I have a box of PPU ammo waiting for when I get mine in.

Somewhere b/t a heavy 30-06 load and a 12 Ga. pump.

PPU is all I've run through it as well, to generate reload brass, and not much of it at that.

Thankfully the stock is sappy, and considerably heavier than the one on the 6.5x55.

Would like to take it hog hunting when I get a little more comfortable w/ it.

Should be a good transition load for what I figure 286 gr./ 2360 fps handloads will generate.

Invigorating.
