The only thing I don’t like about BE86 in 44mag is that it won’t cycle a Desert Eagle.
If you haven’t already, try AA#9. It flows great through the powder measure and isn’t as loud or as flashy as H110, but cycles the Desert Eagle very well.

Good to know. I looked at my data and that isn’t one I have tried yet.

For magnum loads, N110 gives the same velocity of H110, but noticeably less noise and flash, and burns cleaner as well. Still, i kinda like the flash with the H110 loads. :D

I use HS-6 for moderate 44mag. Nice thump without the blast and recoil.[/QUOTE]

Where can I find load data for HS-6? Hornady only shows a JHP load for the 240 grain bullet and Lyman doesn’t show HS-6.

Another powder worth considering is CFE-Pistol. It has become my favorite powder for mild loads in everything from 380 Auto to 44 Mag. It's another one of those powders that measures extremely well.

I use 7.5 grains of Unique behind a 240 grain cast SWC, snappy but not overly so. This in a Model 29 so the ergonomics will be different than the OPs Black Hawk.

Got my components in. I'm disappointed in the load density of the HS-6, I have 1/4" between base of bullet and powder at 0.5 grains over starting load and XTP 240gr. Was expecting to see powder easily but it's way down in the case.....

Is there a source with a chart of powder load densities???? I'd like to be able to research them before I buy powder.

Power pistol is a close powder to this HS-6, I may end up using that if the load density is higher with similar performance.

Longshot powder might suit you...

I use it some in my 44, it'll get up into true magnum velocity with max loads but does it with lighter powder charges than say AA9, 300MP, or H110... so it generated less recoil... but it is bulky enough to fill a case nicely.

It'll shoot nicely in your 357 too.

I got it for 10mm but didn't really like it for the 10 so I've been using it in 357, 41, and 44 mag for range ammo.

Really though.... Unique is the best for what you're trying to accomplish.

Power pistol puts off a huge fireball and extremely loud report.

Every powder is gonna have some kind of trade off. Power pistol will fill the case better but has a nasty loud report and throws huge fireballs out in front of you.

Unique will fill the case well but meters horribly and is a faster powder and has a sharp, snappy recoil impulse in 44mag and gets spiky toward the top (it's not very linear).

True Blue and AA#5 are close in burn rate to HS-6 but again, you won't like the case fill.

I would urge you to try the HS-6 before you dismiss it. I absolutely love the stuff.

Edit: BE-86 is basically power pistol with flash suppresant added and it worked well for me in 44mag, but has a snappier recoil and the accuracy wasn't as good.

I've got HS-6 and 240gr XTP's on the way.

Decided after much reading of people having penetration problems on game with the 200gr that I wouldn't bother with them and stick with the standard 240gr.

If you are worried about penetration, go to a JSP instead of a hollow point or the Speer Deep Curl. I didn't see what animals you are planning on hunting, but for deer, the 180gr out of a 44 mag will expand and more than likely pass completely through as will the 240gr so penetration shouldn't be an issue with either. If you are hunting Hogs or bear, stay away from Hollow Points all together no matter what weight. You want a JSP or even better a Coated Cast Bullet that will penetrate the tough hide and fat.

I'm also going to grab the speer gdsp 240 and 270. The bonded jacketed flatpoint. I think the 270 will make for a more balanced case fill. More recoil tho. Reason I say this is base is longer than xtp from what I can see and the powder charge is only reduced slightly. That will fill the air gap up.

300MP is not the right powder. For this job, I use mostly Unique and some Titegroup.

The 270gr Speer isn’t going to expand if you don’t push it hard.

I just fired 1 of these 12.5 grain HS-6 240XTP loads. It seemed to be no slouch but not punishing. The gun still stood up quite a bit under recoil, much more than a hot 357. I tried it without ear protection and that was not comfortable, got a short ring from it. I'm going to go down to the 12 grain starting load and try that. I went 12.5 worried the starting load was going to be wimpy.

hs-6 is position sensitive. I stopped using it and went to unique for my mid-power 44 magnum loads.

luck,

Perhaps there is a starting load for a reason ?

I find 10.5 to 11 grains a comfortable load for general purpose shooting, but I use lead projectiles.

And I don't recommend shooting without ear protection. That ringing you experienced is permanent damage. Your ears may stop ringing, but will never heal. It gets worse over time.

If you are that worried about a double charge, take a wooden dowel that just fits in the case. Fill a case and use the charge to scribe a line on the dowel.
You can cut it to your preferred length and write the charge weight and bullet weight on it.

I've still been reading around on this subject and see some info on guys liking Herco for this application. Fills the case up nice they say. I read the pistol data is no longer published because allowing is pushing sales on newer powders but a lot of guys are swearing by the Herco for mid range loads. Anyone have experience with this?

I'm still going to work with the HS-6 but am looking for safe similar alternatives.
