Need a nipple recommendation for a Sears Roebuck KentuckyLong Rifle model 292 caplock in .45 caliber. (made in Japan by Miroku.)
Just got this out of 25+ yr. storage. The nipple is there, but want to get a spare. How do I find the right nipple ? I found the standard nipple for a TC Hawken is too big.
Any advice appreciated, thanks.

If you can take the nipple off, take it to a hardware store or fastener store and find out the diameter and pitch you need, it'll be metric for sure and probably one of the standards sold for the Italian or Spanish guns.

Speaking of nipple size, does anyone know the diameter (or drill size) for a musket nipple? I've got one that takes basically a straight pin to clean. This seems remarkably small, but as it's the only musket nipple I have I figured I check before I opened it up.

It’s that small for a reason. Leave it as it is

And I am aware that it's small to both increase the pressure of the flame jet igniting the powder, as well as to hold down the back pressure exerted on the hammer when the main charge goes off.

HOWEVER, I would like to verify what the "standard" orifice size is, as this seems abnormally small (as in none of my nipple picks fit it), and I have had ignition problems in the past. If it is in fact the correct size I will leave it be, but I'd like to know what the "correct size" is.

Unless there are ingnition issues don't mess with it. I clean mine with a torch tip cleaner. If you must open it up you will find it a tedious task because the bit will be so small that the slightest binding can break it. Plus sizing up going to be so minute. As long as you keep it and the flame channel clean you shouldn't have any issues. I use a hose on the nipple and a snug patch on jag to pull and push cleaning fluids through the nipple and channel then when dry pick it with torch tip cleaner. Works great.

Do NOT open it up. A small flash channel helps maintain pressure in the chamber.

If you're having ignition issues, I have to ask... Are you using real black powder or the crap?
