New to Forums. Chose this one due to level of respect shown by most members. Background: upstate NY farmer with open fields. Predominetly hunted long range deer, coyote and woodchuck over last 40 years. Have recently stopped hunting due to ticks, poachers and 3 months of bow season. I am now going to concentrate on target shooting. I will be upgrading scopes and stocks on a batch of Sako's and custom Mausers and can use advice on vintage and mid level AO scopes. We can also discuss the lack of sportsmanship I am experiencing over the last 5 years. This has further degenerated in my neighborhood since the legalization of crossbows. Have now included pictures of 3 mausers I have started setting up for target. Thanks for interest

A hearty welcome, we’re glad you are with us, and we hope you’ll stick around. There are some great folks owning decades of knowledge regarding vintage scopes including where to track them down. @Jim Watson @Slamfire @Offfhand @Picher @Walkalong @eastbank Hopefully some of these guys can get eyes on your thread and help out.

Check back often, sometimes responses pile up fast.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm in Broome County NY a couple of our members just got together to hunt this season. We hunted broome, chenango, and Delaware counties. Had a great time.

I've shot out to 550 at targets, wasn't too bad but need more practice. The club I'm in has a 300 meter range and I shoot that all the time.

As was mentioned there are alot of members with knowledge and resources to help with your quest.

Welcome. Those are some beautiful rifles. I am a big fan of casual shooting with vintage guns. I have a lot of military rifles (nothing as nice as your stash! but my Death Ray .280 K-98 comes close). I find the challenge of connecting with targets using vintage low power optics or irons to be a reward in itself. Keep them as is, freeze a bunch of milk jugs full of neon dyed water and head out in the fields and see what they'll do as-is! A 500 yard hit with a Savage M99 and 2.5x scope on a cinder block from prone is far more satisfying than hitting the same target with a 16x scope in a flat shooting lazer gun.

those 2 bottom scopes are old school too:thumbup: the middle Mauser got the high grade value stock

You're welcome here and I'm flattered to have been named as a person who might be able to help in the target shooting realm. I don't know if you're talking about informal target shooting, or wanting to get into formal/informal competition. If you're just wanting to punch paper for your own satisfaction, I may be able to help, since I've done a bit of rifle improvements to make sporting rifles shoot better, but to be competitive in some formal target aspects is a frustrating and often a very expensive endeavor.

If you reload, success in achieving great accuracy is much easier than trying to get factory ammo that works well enough to be satisfying. Cartridges used for target shooting vary in accuracy, and some is accurate enough for getting started in shooting groups for fun, but soon becomes unsatisfying. To shoot really well, you need to consider handloading.

I hope you find this site meets your needs for information and look forward to your questions/comments.

Hello. Thanks for the welcome and reply. I am predominetly looking to improve my shooting and reloading skills. I have strictly been a hunter and only spent enough time loading and lining in to be proficient out to 300 yards. I have recently stopped deer hunting and am only shooting coyotes if oportunity arrises.I look out the back door at 90 acre hay field that is 400 hundred yards plus long. If a sick coyote wanders out during the day I dose him, most of our coyotes have the mange. See picture of one I got 2 wks ago that was healthy. 250 out with 2506. I am proficient at long range but have never spent time target shooting. This is why I sta coyote and locusts roof brace repair 005.JPG rted the post. Looks like it will be interesting. Thank you.

Well, that first rifle looks pretty targetized already. Granted it is mechanically accurate, all I would do is put a higher power scope on it.
I would not try to make the small ring in the European style stock into a target rifle.

Unless you can do the work yourself, you can probably buy a more accurate stainless and plastic rifle for less than you would pay to have a Mauser souped up.

For most of my centerfire range time, I shoot several bolt-action .223 Rem rifles...all have been glass-bedded and some have Timney triggers installed. My scope brand of choice is Leupold, but also have a few others, especially higher-powered scopes that, if were Leupold, would be over $600, so some are Bushnell, etc.

Most ranges around here are 100-200 yds, but I have a private range that allows me to shoot 400 yds. Unfortunately, it's over a blueberry field and both wind and mirage raise heck on groups.
