Hi, I have an older scope that I cannot find any info on. It is an older Winchester brand 3x9x40 but I cannot find anything very helpful as to the quality and value. It seems to be made by Vanguard for Winchester but I have not confirmed that. Anybody here know anything about this scope? Is it a good one or a run-of-the-mill generic scope? What would the value be if I sold it? Thanks for any help.

Should be just a cheap Chinese scope they slapped there name on. I do remember in the early 2000s my dad had 2 win scopes that came in very nice aluminum cases, kinda like a camera case but long. They were very nice scopes. I believe Winchester have them to him for selling rifles. Some one should know more.

Thanks for the guesses. I was hoping for someone with knowledge of these scopes could tell me more. Troy's mention of a premium for gun dealers sounds possible. I have found nothing on the net on this scope which is very unusual.

Initially I expected this to be a cheap Chinese scope with multiple brands on them. However, my instincts tell me this is not the case. It seems too well made and solid to be a $100 knock off. Vanguard seems to be tied with Winchester scopes and they make some nice glass. They also make some cheaper glass as well. Hopefully someone here knows more than a guess.

There was nothing stamped anywhere unless it's under the rings.
There was a label stating Nitrous Gas Port though.
No other markings on the scope

Nothing under the turret caps.
Total mystery unless under the rings.

use it under conditions like this on a light weight rifle with some recoil on a rough hunt. and its true colors may come to light.

the tube, power ring, and caps looks Chinese made....these came out about the time Winchester was branding all kindsa crap with their name.
Generally I find the optics pretty good on those, but @eastbank said, be gentle with it, and don't trust it overly much.

I have a couple on air rifles. Air rifles are harder on scopes than center in most cases. They should be plenty rugged. They were pretty cheap. Probably under $75. If I remember right they were on the air rifles. They are good in close range low magnification.

It has no real value if you plan to sell it. Maybe $10 at a yard sale. There was a time when I might have mounted it on a 22, but wouldn't even do that anymore.

And it's a 3-9X40, says so right on the scope. No such thing as 3X9X40 scopes.

Product of rifle scope “combos” they figured out it was cheaper to sell a rifle with a China scope and rings than machine the sights, and barrel for “irons”.

Lots of them around from various MFG’s, from owners that swap them out for better glass.
