A special gun that's nothing really special

Today I shot the first gun I ever fired again, it was nothing special to anyone but me. In fact most say, despite Gun Tests loving it and how it's always done everything a gun is supposed to be, it's a terrible gun. It's a Bryco 48 380auto.

But it's not just a Bryco 48, or even the first gun I've fired to me. It's my mom's gun. She wanted something since she was gonna be alone in the woods. She was a slight woman who didn't like guns at all and hated recoil more so she couldn't handle much, and when we were looking no one made a heavy midsized 380 with a short trigger, or at least one we could find. Even so she wished it was a 32acp, which I don't believe they made.

It's a very light recoiling gun that's decently accurate. It's not a plinker but it wasn't meant to be. It was always sort of fun to fire because of it's lack of recoil. I know the horror stories, and maybe if me and my dad knew anything about guns we would have picked up something else but it was a good choice for her.

Now that my mom has passed i try to remember the happy times. That little 380 has a bunch of rounds thru it and started for me a hobby which I enjoy. We shot it a lot together, later we added a Mark II 22 for more fun but I'll always remember that gun.

Quite a bargain for $99 out the door huh?

Sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. My Mom when we were a whole lot younger was sort of anti-gun when it came to something as harmless as a Daisy BB gun (she being of the "you'll shoot your eye out" school of parenting). Didn't stop me and my brother from smuggling "things" into the house whenever we had a chance. And as we got older I think she knew what we were up to but never said or did anything about it.

And just for the record she did fire a gun once. During WWII she was in the local Coast Guard band and part of her "basic training" was shooting an M1911A1. She doesn't remember how she did or if she even hit the target but she still did it!

My first decent gun was a Dan Wesson 15-2 that I bought when my first gun ever, a Taurus 83 went on a trip to sunny FL for it's first repair attempt, and I needed a gun for security work. I stupidly sold it before I moved out of Nevada, and one day, it appeared on Gunbroker! I still had the serial number written down and even before I looked it up I was 99% sure it was my old gun, as it had a scratch on the right side near the trigger guard that looked like a big check mark from hitting it on a slot machine during a fight with some lunatic. I zoned out and forgot to check the auction and was outbid by $1.00. I was very upset with myself for forgetting to watch the auction. It all worked out as I got my DW 715 in near mint condition a couple of weeks later for a much lower price. That was in 2006, and I still have it, along with 2 other DW .357's, both 15-2's.

I had for many years an Erma Excam .22 PPK knock off. It was my woods carry back pocket gun for many years, and potted many a squirrel and grouse, as well as many cans, pine cones, etc. As cheap as it was (about 120.oo early 1980s money) it was stone cold reliable with cci minimags, and great fun to shoot. It is now simply worn out, and being disposed of. I would love to replace it with a real PPK in .22, but cant justify it.
