I've been away from the forum for several days. I'm surprised at this thread. Did the OP really expect a different trend in the response was even possible?

Something no one has pointed out, in this scenario:

"You hear “firecrackers” in the nearby Cafe Square and you are afraid they aren’t really firecrackers."

Many of us are assuming mass shooter. But, the shots we might be hearing could also be coming from an off-duty cop or armed citizen responding to a threat. So, those who would run toward the sound of shots might find an armed party that they don't know is innocent, and engage.

Which is one of a million reasons why it's a no for me.

With no way of letting others around me know I was one of the good guys there's no way I'd go running towards the sound of the shots.

If I were in the immediate line of fire from the perpetrator I'd do what I had to do. But, once the threat was removed (in whatever way) I'd immediately put my piece away.

Situations such as those are very dangerous for anyone visibly holding a firearm who are not wearing a plainly visible police or security uniform.

I believe there was a recent mall shooting where the police pulled up and instantly shot a lawful ccw holder who had his weapon out

An attacker with a knife has to get right next to you to kill you. (And a fire extinguisher and a narwhale tusk are both longer than a knife.) An attacker with a gun does not. So the scenario doesn't match the one in your poll.

That attacker was clearly identified as the attacker immediately since the defenders saw him stab people.

If you did not witness the initial shooting how would you tell friend from foe? Is the guy with a gun the shooter? Is he a saw holder, off duty Leo?

My God,I love the internet

Just shop at malls that are "Gun Free Zones". What's the big deal?

My local mall is one. A ccw holder was recently trespassed from the mall. A crazy woman pulled a knife on him and he drew his gun and she fled. It ended up being a he said/she said situation and the mall had no outside cameras apparently.

I am not playing Hero!. i will run to get away. If that does not work, run to cover and be defensive. My duty is to save my family. Been saying the same thing for 15 or so years. People see it was a "coward" move. But i do not let that bother me.

With or without the wife, I am going to gather up anyone I can, and head directly away from the possible gunfire while calling 911.

A customer of mine was pulling his loaded horse trailer and his truck caught fire. He pulled over and started unloading horses getting badly burned in the process. The horses panicked and some of them ran back into what the perceived safe place, the trailer.
I am smarter than a horse and refuse to head towards a dangerous situation unless I have good reason to do otherwise.

If I were at the mall with my wife, there could only be two reasons. #1 I have lost my mind and gotten married. Or, #2 I’m having a nightmare.
Even being single, I know better then running to the sounds of gun fire when off duty.
Now if I was in the Cafe Square where the shooting started, I would engage the threat.
Once first responders, police or security, arrive, put my gun down and lay on the floor.
