I had been considering a Ruger SR22 for a while now. I watched a bunch of review videos on the internet, did a search here on THR, read a bunch of posts, and went to several LGSs to fondle some SR22s and compare prices. I saw them priced all the way from $349 to $419.

On Saturday, I’d finally decided to “bite the bullet” and buy one. So I went to one of my favorite LGSs. They had one for $379, but it was all black, and I wanted one in OD green and brown. So they checked with one of their wholesalers, and said they could get me one like I wanted by the middle of this week. What’s more, they said they’d sell it to me for $375 – 4 bucks less than the black one they had in stock. So I (that is my wife) wrote out a check.

However, our next stop was Sportsman’s Warehouse because my wife had some Christmas shopping to do there. While we were standing in line at the checkout counter, I was reading their sales ads. Sure enough, right there in black and white, Ruger SR22s for $329 – $46 less than I’d paid not 20 minutes ago!

Oh well. I tell myself Sportsman’s Warehouse probably didn’t have one in the right color. But the truth is, for $46 less, I would have settled for whatever color they had.;)

You will forget the price paid quickly, but will always wish you got the color you wanted. Don't second guess it.
Yeah, you're probably right. Besides, as others have said, my money DID go to support a LGS (Hux's Guns) rather than a big chain store like Sportsman's Warehouse.
Another part of the story was that when we finally got home from town (over 30 miles away), a guy from Hux's called and said I'd left my drivers license, which they'd been using for identification, on the counter.
Not to worry though - the guy said he lives out near us, so he'd just drop my license by the house on his way home, and he did. I seriously doubt someone at Sportsman's Warehouse would have done anything like that.:)

Your LGS sounds like a first rate place to do business with!

My "I hate when that happens" is when I go to a gun show and see something I really want but don't have enough money to buy it. Then when I do have the funds in hand I can't find anything I want!

Oh well...life goes on!

Cash and carry ?
Yeah, it's "cash and carry" here in Idaho. However, as I said, the LGS didn't have a SR22 in the color I wanted in stock. So they ordered it (from Lipsey's I think), and it should be in this week. When it arrives, I'll drive to town, fill out the paper work, and bring my new .22 pistol home - the "cash" part of "cash and carry" has already been done.:D

I paid $259 for an all black SR-22 when they first came out. Had a great kitchen-table FFL back then who jumped on a deal. It was a side business for him, and he eventually decided it wasn't worth the hassle.

I've also bought guns that later went down in price.

Thing is, it doesn't really matter when you take them out shooting.

Back when 22LR was nonexistent on the shelves, Rural King had them on sale for $279. I kick myself for not getting one then. Fin, Feather, and Fur has them on sale for $319 right now. My wife already had one, now we have 2, and they're a good shooting 22. :)

We have a large but independent dealer in town that has an annual "ruger days" sale and the prices are hard to believe. I bought an SR22 in all black for around $279 during the sale, and even then the colored models were full or nearly full price. They had a tungsten gray kind of color I liked pretty well but not enough to spend $350 on it. If your dealer got you the color you want cheaper than the all black model they are treating you right.

Even if you pay a little bit more, it's still better to get the one you know you want. I've learned this often myself.
Going for the one with the extra length barrel which I 'didn't exactly want' or the different grips that I 'didn't exactly want' but still went for them because 'better deal'.
Few weeks of owning guns like that and I'm already considering trading them for something closer to what I originally wanted.
Even if it's up to $100 bucks more, just go with the one you know you want.

If it's the dealer I think he may be independent but he is BIG. Not many dealers have the CEO of Ruger there for a product introduction.

Vances. They are bigger than the chain stores for sure. Its about a half hr to 45 minute drive for me and I try to support the small local shops most of the time but you can't pass up "ruger days" :D

Different dealer than the one I thought about. But anyone that sells 1500+ guns just counting 3 Models on Black Friday is a pretty big dealer. Even with a Platoon sized sales staff I can't figure out how they ran that many NICS. Of course given that roughly 43% of Adult Males have a Carry Permit you have to assume the majority of their customers do so that reduces the number of NICS.

43%? Wow, I had no idea. Do you know where there is a state-by-state breakdown of that? I be curious about how it varies nationwide.

You have to take a ticket/number to get a salesperson. Then you get one on one service and when you want to buy they actually have a row of computers on one wall where they send you to start your 4473, which then prints a completed form that just needs appropriate signatures. Also have the benefit that Ohio CCW's issued after a certain date cover you for the background check. I have never been there for black friday but the day I was there was super busy and I think I was in and out in less than an hour. On busy days you want to get there when they open and go straight to the kiosk for a number ticket.

It's been a few years since I visited Vances (about an hour and a half drive for me). The neighborhood is a little "sketchy" but it's a nice store and known for a wide selections of firearms selling at reasonable prices. I'll have to make a trip there sometime soon.

I never go downtown to the original store anymore. The new location at alum creek drive is bigger, easier to get to, and a much safer area. Its about like visiting a cabelas, large parking lot, large building all by itself. It also has an indoor range although I haven't shot there before. I always liked the original store on Cleveland avenue...once I was safely inside.

Its on the south end, just north of 270. Here is the website:

It feels a lot like walking into one of the newer/smaller Cabelas stores only it is pretty much all closely related to shooting as opposed to having all the camping, fishing and clothing stuff.
They have another big store east of columbus in Hebron as well now but I haven't been there.

Sorry for the hijack .308. Still think you got a good deal getting the exact gun you want.

...getting back on track. That SR22 is a sweet shooter, .308 Norma. Good choice! I wish I had a decent LGS around here. These guys in this area just want to push as much overpriced product out of their door as they can with minimal personalized service.
