I do not know of a piston action pistol smaller than the Desert Eagle.

Although the broader definition of semi-auto pistol would include AR pistols and Desert Eagles (which do have pistons), Jim is correct that there may not be a smaller handgun with one.

The Walther P99 AS has a pretty interesting real DA/SA trigger in a striker fired pistol.
Taurus has also an interesting solution in the 24/7, PT-709, G2 and G3 with a SA striker fired trigger that in case of misfire goes double action for a second strike capability.
Grand Power has some models with a thumb safety lever that acts like a cocked-and-locked safe, as a decocker and with the lever in the down position it converts the pistol to DAO.

Oh, that reminds me, there is the Daewoo "Fast Action", or whatever they call it now, where you can push the hammer to the down position, but the mainspring remains compressed. FN invented it, but Daewoo made it work. Daewoo pistols are marketed under some other name nowadays - Lionheart?

Yes and the outfit making BHP springs is selling the SFS kit, lots of the Turkish copies seem to be getting them.

I tried to like the Walther 99 AS but never could be sure what mode I had gotten to or which I should have gotten to.

HK USP Variant 1 tried to cover all the bases. Lever up for safe, down for fire, way down to decock. Ray Ordorica and I pointed out the risk of hitting the lever too hard and inadvertently decocking but HK wasn't interested in user input. But I understand they beefed up the detent.
