I have picked up a sizeable stash of .40 S&W ammo cheap enough that I need to purchase a pistol to shoot it out of. However, I am a reloader, and I will end up reloading .40 Smith ammo for whatever handgun I get. I have been looking at police trade in Sig 229's, but the Glock 22's appear to be a great deal as well. Would a Gen 3 or 4 G22 work for me regarding reloading? I have heard stories that they are not ideal sidearms for reloaded ammo. I have also heard that the gen 3 and 4's have more case support and it is not a problem. What seems to be the predominant opinion at this time?

I have reloaded many tens of thousands of rounds for my gen 3 glocks. Split between two G22s and a 27. (Mostly one 22). I throw the brass in the hopper for my progressive along with my 226, 229, USP, berettas etc. Never an issue. I load mid level loads.

I have both the Sig 229 and the Gen 2 Glock 22. Both are .40 S&W and were bought used. I have only shot reloads through them. No problems with either gun.

I bought a 9MM conversion barrel for the Glock for a little less than $100.00. I am considering doing the same for the Sig. No problems with the .40 S&W, I just like having versatility of using both calibers in both guns. More fun for a little bit of money.

That has been my observation.

Glock will tell you that. Opinion seems to be split between 'that's BS, and Glock is just covering their fanny with legalese!' and 'reloading plain lead bullets is a bad idea for polygonal rifling!'. If you're going to reload using plated, jacketed, or coated bullets then I'd not worry about using the OEM barrel at all.

I used to shoot a Gen 4 G35 (just a long slide G22) for GSSF matches and I used nothing but reloads in it. I flirted with cast bullets for it and had no issues other than they weren't as accurate as jacketed.

I cut my teeth on reloading .40 S&W and the Glock fired all of my dumb mistakes without issue.

And with Glock 22, using 40-9mm conversion barrel will allow you to shoot even cheaper 9mm reloads.

I have BCA/KKM/Lone Wofl/Tactical Kinetics conversion barrels for my G22/23/27 and enjoy shooting 9mm reloads. BTW, BCA conversion barrel is $43 with free shipping - https://www.bearcreekarsenal.com/bc...-9mm-conversion-barrel-stainless-steel-finish

Yes.

Glock, like most other gun manufacturers do not recommend use of reloads.

But, what do thousands of match shooters shoot all around the world every week? You got it, reloads. ;)

I have also heard that the gen 3 and 4's have more case support and it is not a problem. What seems to be the predominant opinion at this time?
Yes, Gen 3/4 Glock 22s have better case base support than Gen 1/2 Glock 22s.

And my Gen3 Glock 22 has better case base support than many other brand factory barrels. When I come across overly expanded/bulged brass, they are most often not from Glocks (Glock strikers leave a very distinct rectangle primer indent instead of rounded indent).

If you’re worried about it get yourself a $100 or less aftermarket barrel.

If you’re not hot rodding your .40 brass, factory barrel should be ok.

If you want to reload and shoot lots of lead bullets, be sure to clean often or buy a barrel with regular rifling. Coated/plated/jacketed work great.

DC4F1E7E-B963-4EC5-ABF2-2B5493A0DB4F.jpeg I just started reloading for my G22 gen 4 and I was slightly concerned about case support also. I fired 800 rounds through this barrel and all of the cases bulged to .430 at the fattest point. The Lee standard resizing die took the cases to .418 or so with no problems. Loaded and fired my reloads and they bulged to exactly .430 again. It’s visually noticeable more than anything I’ve ever seen but doesn’t seem to be a problem. I have very little experience compared to everybody here but just thought I’d let you know how my first reloads went. :)
BTW that chamber is loose as a goose! But the gun runs great and it’s my favorite Glock.

They're probably all just fine, but I always point out, the reason there is a Gen 4, is because of the previous generations in .40 S&W.

If I was choosing a Glock to shoot .40 S&W, I'd pick a Gen 4 gun.
