Hi guys,

I just bought a glock 20 and I'm planning to load 10mm for it. I've never loaded the cartridge but I've got a thousand cases headed my way from Starline and I'm curious what powders have gotten best results. I've got AA#9 and CFE Pistol on my shelf and I'm thinking of giving those a try but what are some good ones for max velocity?

I've heard 800x is the one to choose for velocity but I'm afraid I cant deal with trickling handgun powders, and I want to load towards the upper end so I'll feel uncomfortable with a powder that drops with a lot of variation (I learned my lesson from the 1lb of Universal I bought when I first started- never gonna use that lb up in my life I reckon)

I'm hoping theres something that gives similar velocity to the 800x loads that I can meter a little more comfortably.

If you've got AA#9, you've already got one of the best for the heavier bullets (180 and up). That's what I use for my full-bore 10mm.

I use 800-X under 180 gr and 200 gr XTP and it works very nicely. Got to weigh each charge but it burn clean with very little muzzle flash.

My favorite load set up was 800 X with 200 gr Hornady XTP for field carry.

The downside, 800X meters like corn flakes. Wouldn't use in a progressive set up with a powder drop. Would be too inconsistent for that. I charged individually when working up the load. Won't advertise my final load weight because it was over the max listed.

I used a Storm Barrel to support the casing better than the factory barrel because I was pushing the advertised max load a bit to see how fast I could get the round going. Also had to go to a much heavier recoil spring so I could keep the brass in the same county.....LOL

I no longer have a 10MM but am fighting the urge to buy another one and get back into it.

I just got a 10mm pistol (Rock Island) and I found that Power Pistol gives great results and meters very well. Much smaller flakes than Unique. With a 200 gr bullet I got an average of 1160 fps and an extreme spread of 30. At 15 yds it grouped 1 inch.

When researching powders for 10mm, Power Pistol and Blue Dot jumped out to me as being good choices. Maybe not the cleanest or lowest flash powders, but on paper they give good velocities and from what others have told me good accuracy.

The one bit of advice I can personally give you is if you ever plan to load a JHP, stick to 200 grain XTP's as they seem purpose built to work at 10mm velocities. My concern is any 155, 165, or 180 are built for .40 S&W and if they get cranked up in the 10mm they will not preform well in the field.

Back when HS-7 was available it was the best choice IMO. Now I think AA#7 is the 10mm powder.

That said, all the powders mentioned above will also work and fairly well. Since you already have AA#9 voice that a test first. If the accuracy not to your liking or it's too snappy try AA#7 after that.

Long shot is a favorite of mine for 180gr bullets in 10mm. If i remember correctly 9.4 gr of long shot under a Sierra 180gr sportsmaster jhp out of a 5 inch 1911 gave me 1250 fps avg.

I wish I had not read this post. Now I'm itching to buy the long slide TRP from Springfield Armory or the Kodiak or Bruin from Dan Wesson, decisions decisions decisions.

I ran tests in my Witness Match 10mm (4.75" barrel) with Blue Dot, Power Pistol, and AA#9, as I heard they were all good for 10mm. And, since BE86 is one of my favorite all-around powders, I threw it in just to see how it would do. I was using plated Xtreme bullets.

The data below is my gun, my results, YMMV, yada yada yada. Check with published load data and always start low and work up.
I was a little disappointed with AA#9. I started seeing pressure signs before I got to the max charge. I stopped the test at 13.5gn charge, and settled on a working charge of 13.2gn, where I saw 1178fps. It seemed to burn a little dirty for me.

I ran Blue Dot up to 10.5gn where I saw 1230 fps, but the best accuracy was at 10.2gn and 1208fps. I did not think it metered all that well, but certainly better than 800x.

Power Pistol I ran up to 8.2gn where I saw 1150fps. Accuracy was pretty good.

I have to admit that I am a little biased, but BE86 really surprised me. I ran up to 8.5gn where I saw 1237fps and was just starting to see pressure signs, but the best accuracy was at 8.3gn where I saw 1209fps. This powder meters well, is very economical (low powder charge) and seems to be cleaner than the other powders.

I have about a 1/2 pound of 800x that I have been wanting to try in 10mm, but just have not gotten around to it.

I have since started using Hornady 180 FMJ bullets with Bluedot and have had the best results with 10.7gn at 1233fps.

I like my 10mms, a lot. I am a fan of a mid range load of Longshot and a 180 grain bullet. It's my range load & good for a 230 power factor. Recently I decided to try some 200 grain bullets in 10mm. I bought brand new Starline brass & set up the LnL to build the new load. I found that 7.8 grains of Power Pistol (also about mid range) gave me an extreme spread of only 8 FPS over the 5 shots over the chrono and a 232 power factor. I still like Longshot with the 180s, but I found a "keeper" for 200 grain bullets...

Maybe I should try the Longshot with the 200s!

I’m using Longshot in .40 Cal with good results as well. If you load.40, give it a try.

If I ever go back to 10MM I’ll give it a shot too
