Mounting a scope on a rem 700

first of all I would like to say thanks for all the information i have gotten from this forum

been browsing this site for a while but just recently signed up

I just bought a new Remington 700 Long Range in 30-06, at the same time i purchased a Leupold 2 piece scope mount setup for a 30 mm scope

when i got everything put together i put my bore sight in, and its soo far off its never gonna work, at 30ish feet the crosshairs are literally 5 inches above the bore

Im stumped, took it all apart and have my calipers on everything, I can see where the rear needs to be taller than than front and had it assembled properly

anyone ever ran into this problem??

are the 2 piece leupold mounts junk? I have a 1 piece style on my savage 110 and it work beautifully

any and all info is greatly appreciated

I found a different set in my parts bin, and they seem to be level, although I dont have any 30 mm rings in this style

There is something weird about the Leupold things, and I cant figure it out

1) It appears to me that you have the front mount on backwards- if you look at the hole spacing, it looks if you turn it around, it won't block the action. I'd try that first, and see where you're at from there.
 
Just got back from the back 40 after taking it apart and putting it together multiple times, I fired 13 rounds through it and got it on paper at 50 yards, it was only a few clicks to the right

farmboy is/was correct i shouldnt have used the bore sight in my living room at only 30 feet

I do think this 700 long range is going to be a performer, the trigger felt fine, the bolt cycles smoothly, and its got a great feel to it
 
As noted above, front mount is reversed. Although that should not cause any change in elevation at all. I have found that some receivers are inconsistent dimensionally, requiring the use of shims to get the rings on the same plane/at the same elevation so that there is enough adjustment in the scope. In my experience Winchester seems to be the worst offender with that. Brownell's has scope base shims of various thicknesses to correct that. Far better than using a piece of soda can. I have a concern that the dissimilar metals will induce corrosion at some point.
 
in the pics I did have the front base/mount on backwards, I have it on properly now, I shouldnt have used the boresight in such a close range, I literally had a minor freak-out, after a phone call to leupold and some reading on here I was able to figure it out

went to the back 40 with it and put 13 rounds of some store bought 150 grainers through it whil cleaning the barrel in between shots got it on paper at 50 yards, might take a trip to the range today and get it dailed in better
 
The overhang of those bases over the receiver opening leads me to think that they are for a Remington 700 Short Action instead of a Long Action. Maybe.
 
I am not sure if they specify long or short, maybe universal, this is my first time using them, I would have prefered a 1 piece base but its what LGS had on the shelf, here is a pic of the booklets that came in the packages

You can turn the front base in either direction in order to fit the scope you're using.

You have windage adjustable mounts. They came out years ago to be used on rifles that were not drilled and tapped at the factory. It was common for gunsmiths to not get the holes drilled perfectly and normal mounts would have the scope out of alignment with the barrel.

I don't like that type of mount at all. Wouldn't touch a set or have them as a gift. But if you want to use them.

#1 You have to get the crosshairs centered in the scope. Adjust the windage as far to the right as possible, then count clicks as you move it as far to the left as possible. Divide that number by 2. Move the scope back to the right the number of clicks you got when you divided by 2. It is now centered.

#2 When you mount the scope it is vital that the front ring is twisted into the base in line with the rear ring. They make special tools to make this easier. This might be better done by a gunsmith. If not done properly it puts stress on the scope and will break the scope.

#3 Bore sight the rifle, but use the adjustment on the base to get the windage zeroed instead of using the scope turret. Maybe even after you start shooting. You can then fine tune the zero by using the scope turret.

You currently have the windage so far off on the rear base that you can't get it zeroed.
 
one thing I was able to acomplish with the bore sight was to get left and right adjustment with the rear base/mount screws adjusted tight, here is a pic at 100 yards from yesterday with factory 150 grainers

Did you try reversing the rear base as well? All of the bases of that type (adjustable windage) I have seen have the adjustment screws to the back.
Did you lap in the rings? You would surprised how far out of round some rings are.
 
if you reverse the rear base it will block the bolt handle from being able to fully lift, and I have since rotated the front mount as well, the rifle and scope sre doing great so far, ive only used factory 150 grainers so far but it is working great, heres a pic at 150 yards
 
if you rotate the front base (closest to the muzzle) the bullet will be about 4 feet low at 100 yards

if you rotate the rear base (closest to your eye ball) it will obstruct the bolt from lifiting all the way and be able to use it

Bob97 that is a private range outside of Olympia WA, it goes 500 meters back and is usually very quiet, I love spending my days off there
