Favorite powder for a 9mm 124gr bullet?

I like sport pistol for low to mid range and be-86 and power pistol for upper end loads. Lots of good powders to pick from.

I discovered True Blue during some of the Obama era shortages. I like it in my 9x19 with 115 and 124 grain bullets these days.

There are other powders that work well in the 9x19 as already mentioned on the thread.

HP-38 or Ramshot Silhouette. For me they are interchangeable with the HP-38 being a slight bite more economical.

As several have mentioned, there are numerous good powders for 9mm. W231 and CFE Pistol have worked well for me. While there maybe other excellent choices out there, I don't feel the need to try anything else for my plinking rounds.

Favorite powder for a 9mm 124gr bullet?
34 posts & a hundred different answers ... Titegroup, Universal, W231, etc, etc.
  • W231/HP-38 - Used to be my reference powder for 9mm (Now Sport Pistol) as it metered with around .1 gr variance, produced good accuracy but is temperature sensitive if needing to make power factor and limited in achieving velocity.
  • Titegroup - Yeah, I like Titegroup for 9mm as it produces more accurate loads than W231/HP-38, meters comparable, less temperature sensitive, achieves higher velocities.
  • IMR Target - While larger flake powder that doesn't meter as well as W231/HP-38 with .2+ gr variance, produces more accurate target loads.
  • Sport Pistol - Meters with less than .05 gr variance for me, cleaner burning.
  • WSF - My reference powder for full power loads that meters around .1 gr variance, produces good accuracy even at lower mid level load data but reverse temperature sensitive.
  • BE-86 - My new reference powder for full power loads that meters well, produces better accuracy than my reference loads. If you shoot 40S&W also, my new favorite 40S&W powder.

BE-86 or Power Pistol are my favorites for 124 grain bullets in 9mm. I started using Power Pistol and then discovered BE-86. Eventually that will be my go to powder once PP is gone

True Blue, Silhouette, Zip, Power Pistol, Bullseye, AA#5, N320 - heck I've even loaded with Blue Dot and been OK.

My favs though are True Blue & Zip for clean, low power loads and PP for flash & bang.

For power and accuracy, there is the "big 3"

Ramshot Silhouette
Hodgdon HS-6
Winchester Autocomp

There is probably nothing better for 124 grain bullets, if you want powder and accuracy. Of course, 40 powders will work just fine. But I would steer clear of titegroup. Probably the dirtiest of the bunch, runs really hot, and below average accuracy. But its cheap?
