I have one 9mm pistol that I use for my concealed carry pistol. It's good for killing man sized targets at 7 yards but I really don't care to shoot it for fun. It's a S&W shield. I'm not bashing the shield it's great for doing what I described and I almost forget that I'm carrying it when I am carrying it.

I live in CA so all the pistols I buy have to be on the roster. I reload and I have a ton of 9mm cases. Every time I go to the range I seem to bring home more 9mm than I shoot and even when I don't shoot 9mm I end up picking up some. I have a bucket full of 9mm cases and I have one 9mm pistol that I really don't want to shoot.

I've been thinking since I reload for 9mm and I don't shoot much of it but I have a lot brass I should look into buying a decent shooter. Why not I have the perfect excuse to buy another gun. The only problem is I really don't know what to buy.

I'm not a big fan of Glock but I don't care what it is if it's fun to shoot and decent in the accuracy department. I also don't want to spend a fortune on another pistol. Kind of brings me back to Glock.

Any suggestions on a decent 9mm pistol that won't break the bank and would be fun to shoot?

It's purely subjective, but the SIG p320 was a Glock-killer for me. I shoot it better, full market support, truly modular (if that's important to you).

I run a full size slide on a compact frame. More concealable that way.

Used Beretta 92 or SIG 226 or a 1911 series in 9mm. Don't know what they cost in California but elsewhere all three can be had for under $600 and probably more toward $500 and are all great potential full size range guns with single action capability.

Canik TP9 would be my answer... Until you said CA Roster. Then I'm not sure cuz I don't know what's on it.

Then my next answers are always CZ75 and family (EAA Witness, Jericho, Turkish clones, etc) for mag compatibility as I'm sure tracking down mags can be an issue.

Beretta is also an awesome choice!!!

If you like having a bunch of magazines, buy a Glock because they’re cheap and reliable. Since you’re stuck with 10 rounds the 43x and 48 are designed for 10 rounds and these guns are proving to be reliable. Regularly priced at $450.

What do you consider a decent price?

$840 ish

This may be a little more than decent priced but I have 2. (one for a spare since I use it in matches) Really like it a lot! (favorite range toy)

A 1911 in 9mm is just sweet!

About 30k rounds thru number 1 no problems, shoots as good as I am capable of.
After mags are cheap
https://www.cdnnsports.com/1911-10rd-9mm-zenith-magazine.html $15 hold 10 rounds all that's allowed in CA.

I have an XD and P226 and like them both as well.

I guess what I'm looking for is a full size frame with a decent barrel length in the $500-600 dollar range. I'm not a snob and if I found something for less that fit my big hands I wouldn't rule it out. That being said I have never bought a used pistol but I'm not above it. I would love to have another 1911 only in 9mm. I have a Kimber in 45 and really like it. I don't know much of anything about the hi point but I think they do have some CA friendly units. Like I said I'm not a snob and need a reason to burn up the pile of brass I have accumulated. I've considered buying or putting together a 9mm AR but I just have more fun shooting pistols.

I've only shot 3 different 9mm pistols. The shield which I own and two Glocks. One a 17 which I did not not like at all and a 19. The 19 wasn't great feeling in my hand but I shot it pretty well. My Kimber 1911 didn't really impress me much at first but the more I shot it the better I liked it and the better I was with it.

A CZ75 or clone thereof (such as the EAA Witness) can easily be had in the OP's price range. They are my favorites.

However... this RIA 9mm 1911 cost me under $350... don't recall the exact price... plus shipping and FFL. If a SA trigger is okay, a 1911 is hard to beat.

It shoots as good as it looks.

If the OP can find one of the police trade-in Glock 22's online....

This one cost something like $260 plus shipping and FFL.

Yes, it's 40 caliber. I paid $129 total for a 9mm conversion barrel and G17 magazine from Lone Wolf.

Now I have either a G22 or a G17 whenever I want. It takes literally less than one minute to switch back and forth.

The only ria 9mm I could find is not on the CA roster. If that was available here I would have no problems buying one. I'm kind of limited to what I can buy new. You can do a private party transfer with non roster pistols but if you can find one expect to pay more than what it would cost new.

The Beretta 92 looks pretty decent as well as a couple of others.

RIA 9mm/22tcm 1911!!!!

I can't think of a pistol that has more potential accuracy than a 1911 and RIA usually offers very good "bang for the buck". I don't think any pistol has more upgrades available for it than a 1911 so the pistol can grow with you as you advance in skill. Plus they are a pleasure to shoot!

The 22tcm barrel would just be a bonus and a ton of fun to shoot!

I have owned a Beretta 92 INOX for 25+ years. It is a fantastic self defense / night stand gun. As much as I love my Beretta I think 1911's are much better range guns. With a good crisp trigger I can shoot a 1911 better than any other gun I own even though I have at least double the trigger time with my Beretta.

I like the S&W M&P 2.0 Compact; I can have 15 round mags, but what I like over the same sized Glock 19 is the interchangeable backstraps so I can make it fit MY hand a lot better which makes it more fun to shoot. I have seen them for $349 recently

If you can find a 1911 in 9mm of some sort that is approved I bet you will like it. A buddy of mine just bought a rock island GI model in 9mm and we shot it some last weekend. My 2nd mag with it I was hitting a 3 inch steel plate at 15yds pretty consistently. I'm sure that doesn't sound particularly impressive but with most of my pistols when you're shooting steel the front sight completely hides a 3" steel plate. His rock island had a little bit finer sights and hit just a little bit higher where you could really see the plate, and it had a surprisingly nice trigger.
