how many pistols are on the cali roster? guess I need to go google and see the list before I recommend one for ya.

are ya against plastic framed pistols? or for that matter steel or aluminum ones?

edit part: found it 798 it shows but in all calibers and revolvers included and even obsolete ones that might be harder to find.

cz75 on the list in a few versions. I'd look that way.

Not on CA roster - https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search?make=150970

Smith and Wesson SD 9
With heavy trigger, not really a "fun shooter"

To be honest, the Hi Point c9 is fun to shoot. Budget friendly, on the CA list, and lifetime warranty.
Surprisingly, Hi Points are quite accurate shooters.

Used Beretta 92 or SIG 226 or a 1911 series in 9mm. Don't know what they cost in California
A small fortune even for used pistols IF you could find one in Redding CA. New 1911 9mm will run you $800+. OP's best option may be to find one online and have it shipped to his FFL.

CZ75 and family
Good recommendation - https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search?make=151012

Beretta is also an awesome choice!!!
Models on CA roster - https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search?make=151008

tristar c100 and t-100
Not on CA roster

Don’t forget to look at a CZ P10c.
You mean CZ P-01 - https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search?make=151012

Glock ... 43x and 48
Not on CA roster

Get a first generation M&P9C
Not on CA roster. Trying to find one used is like finding hen's teeth.

The M&P 2.0
Not on CA roster. S&W pulled all semi-auto pistols except for 22LR, Shield 9/40 and SDVE 9/40 - https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search?make=151003

A CZ75 or clone thereof (such as the EAA Witness) can easily be had in the OP's price range.
CZ75 clones are not on CA roster.

CZ75 is a good recommendation.

A RIA 9mm 1911
Not on CA roster. RIA .38 Super in Mil Spec trim is on the CA roster and you can get a 9mm barrel for it - https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search?make=151015

Well sir, in my opinion, [92FS M9A1] is about as good as it gets....https://gunprime.com/product/beretta-m9a1-9mm-4-9-bl-2-15rd-br92m9a1m/
While 92FS M9A1 is on the CA roster but this model is not a CA compliant model as it needs to be 10 round magazine model.

police trade-in Glock 22's online....
When having used/police trade-in pistols shipped to CA, they must currently be on CA roster so only Gen3 Glocks are allowed - https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search?make=150972

RIA 9mm/22tcm 1911
Not on CA roster.

Not on CA roster and H&K models on the roster is way beyond OP's budget

S&W M&P 2.0 Compact
Not on CA roster.

1911 in 9mm ... approved I bet you will like it.
I am sure OP will like it but out of budget range as they are from Kimber and Springfield Armory.

Take my word, don't become like CA.

I know a lot of isn't CA approved. To me, as a guy from a much freer state, I dunno what to suggest then. If more things aren't permitted than are, I guess go with whatever you can.

I live in Indiana. Basically, if it doesn't fire "ninja stars" it's legal.

I'd figure out whatever the OP's limited options are and just roll with that...or move, I guess.

I'm looking for is a full size frame with a decent barrel length in the $500-600 dollar range ... decent shooter.

Any suggestions on a decent 9mm pistol that won't break the bank and would be fun to shoot?
Here's Turner's current weekly ad and they usually have good prices on sales (They do have a store in Sacramento if you are willing to make the drive) - https://www.turners.com/info/weekly-ad

You should be able to get Springfield Armory XD9 for under $500

I would love to have another 1911 only in 9mm.
Your choices are Kimber and Springfield Armory but both are $800 -$1000+

The shield which I own and two Glocks. One a 17 which I did not not like at all and a 19. The 19 wasn't great feeling in my hand but I shot it pretty well.
My suggestion would be Glock 22/23 for $499 and getting a 40-9 conversion barrel (BCA conversion barrel for G22 $42.99) - https://www.bearcreekarsenal.com/bc...-9mm-conversion-barrel-stainless-steel-finish

After reading post #27 I believe I am going to stay here in Wisconsin where I can own any of those guns and actually do own a few of them.
:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Actually, living in CA, I am sure glad I am not living in Illinois or New York.

Vote people ... Do not let your state become like CA.

On a happier note, wife and I are looking to move out of CA later in our retirement but for now, we need to tend to my aging parents so we have to stay.

I'm with the others on the CZ 75B. Just hold it in your hand, and you'll know whether or not you need to buy it.
I loved the "Mmmmmm, nice" grip feel when I first held the CZ 75 and shot well for me. Would make a good shooter for the OP.

Bud's has CA compliant CZ 75B for $532 + free shipping - https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/31182/cz-usa+01102+cz+75+b+10+1+9mm+46"

CZ 75BD for $537 + free shipping - https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/31181/cz-usa+01130+cz+75+bd+10+1+9mm+46"

From the time I pull out of the driveway I am 4 minutes from Illinois, Grew up in Illinois and still have family in Illinois. I have now been a Cheeze Head for 40 years. I am fully aware what is going on in Illinois. Have never been to NY but I have been to Maryland and found anything east of Ohio makes me uncomfortable. At the same Time I have trouble with the Big Bridges going West, even though my son is in Minn. and my sisters are all in Montana.

The CA roster does make it a big tougher to help. Personally, the three that come to mind are: (1) a 1911 in 9mm; (2) Browning Hi Power or clone (if available); or (3) a CZ, but I'm not very well educated on those, so I'll leave the choice of model to others to recommend.

It’s nice here and we need the votes! Come to Texas y’all! :) When Texas falls to the communists, the entire country is screwed.

I agree with LiveLife about the Glock with a conversion barrel.

Grand Power K100 or Q100: scary accurate soft shooters. I have a first generation Q100 and it's a joy to shoot. Probably the funniest 9mm I ever shot and I've shot quite a bunch...

A SAR B6P is really hard to beat. I bought one just because it was so cheap and appeared to be well built. It is super accurate and operates flawless.

a 5906 third Generation Smith and Wesson would be a used gun, and I know nothing of the CA roster, but I do know they're accurate, you'll never wear one out, and they can be had reasonably priced within your budget including a thousand rounds of factory ammo.

I just purchased a CZ 75B prior to Christmas for $499.99 (free shipping, no sales tax and no CC fee) from Reed’s; good price and good handgun. It melts into my hand - like others have stated, it has to be held/ handled to appreciate the design - it Is a simple/ practical design that works and works very well.

My default advice is that everybody needs at least one of a Glock 19 or M&P 2.0 Compact because they're such a versatile size, inexpensive and super reliable. I don't think either one is welcome in California, though. Honestly if I lived in California I think I'd stick to revolvers because it seems less likely you'll run into trouble with them going forward. There are even a few 9mm revolvers out there if you don't mind moon clips.

Browning Hi Power or clone (if available); or a CZ
Hi Power is a great pistol but unfortunately above OP's budget of $500-$600 and clones like FEG are not on the roster.

CZ 75 is a great choice.

Grand Power K100 or Q100
Not on CA roster

Not on CA roster

5906 third Generation Smith and Wesson
Not on CA roster

Good recommendation

What part?
Northwest Coast, moved from Central Valley

Glock 19 or M&P 2.0 Compact ... I don't think either one is welcome in CA
Gen3 G19 yes. M&P 2.0 Compact not on CA roster.

9mm revolvers out there if you don't mind moon clips.
OP is looking for a full size frame with a decent barrel length in the $500-600 dollar range ... decent shooter. 5"-6" 9mm revolvers on CA roster are above OP's budget.

I'm thinking maybe a G19. I've shot one a few years ago and it was ok. Just need a better reason to reload my 9mm brass. Shooting the shield doesn't really do it for me. I like the shield for carry reasons it's been a reliable gun and the trigger is broken in making it a little better. If I have something a little more fun to shoot I think reloading won't feel like a chore. I reload 45acp, 38 special and 357 as well. The other pistols are fun to shoot and it makes reloading for them actually enjoyable. When I have to load for the 9mm I put it off as long as I can and don't particularly enjoy doing it.

My suggestion, if the CZ75 is a bit above your budget then I would suggest holding off and saving for one. You won't be disappointed. I have a metal frame Witness 45acp and a poly frame Witness Pavona 380 and I love shooting both of them.

Right now because of an inheritance I now have two 45acp, four 380, two 22LR pistols and seven 9mm and if I had to place them in an order #1 would be a tie between my 45 Witness and my 9mm Taurus PT92C. And for those that don't care, yes I prefer my Taurus PT92C above the HK PV9.

Get a couple Star 9mm for the same price as a new Glock. So you can have a couple parts pistols and the accurate one out of the bunch gets used. It's what I'm doing when I finish my certification at work.
