Due to unfortunate circumstances(death in the family), I am in a situation where I need to pick 10 guns from a very large collection.

I want to make sure that I am not letting go of any gems so I thought I would go here for advice.

I really just want some guns that I can be proud to own, but are also fun to shoot.

Here is what I have already decided on
  • Colt trooper 38 special
  • Smith and Wesson Model 10-8 stainless
  • Smith and Wesson model 686 stainless
  • H&R Sportsman 22(really just like the idea of this gun)
  • Springfield 1911-A1

I need to pick 5 more from the list below
  • Ruger Mark 2
  • Smith and Wesson 357 highway Model 28-2
  • Smith and Wesson 4506-1(pristine condition)
  • Smith and Wesson 539
  • Tanfoglio Witness Target (40 caliber, like new)
  • FM Hi Power(Argentina)
  • Sistema Colt (trigger is not original, maybe other stuff replaced as well)
  • Rossi M720

What 4 would you pick?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also if any from my decided list are not good let me know.

So you need to pick 5 from 8?

How about a suggestion on the 3 to leave instead?

You don't take a Rossi and leave a Smith so, the Rossi's out.

Two to go.

Ruger Mk IIs are all over the place at good prices.

One to go.

The Witness because; .40

Easy-peasy at least for..... me-ezy.

Todd.

Ain't no model 10s in stainless. Maybe a 13. Keep after the Smith's, the Argentine.

S&W M28-2
S&W 4506-1
S&W M539
Tanfoglio Witness Target .40 S&W

Ruger MkII

In one spot you say 5 still to choose and in another you say which 4 so I separated out #5.

PS This is a never sale list. If you might sell or trade the items the list might be different.

the model 10-8 is strange to me. It's definitely not blue and it does look stainless. The serial number on the frame does not match the number on the arm.
Also, I did want to pick 5 out of the last 8(not 4). Sorry for the confusion. I uploaded pictures of the 10-8 below.
Thank you all for the suggestions so far

I'm guessing nickel.

Todd.

M10-8 3" in Nickel.
The 3" is relatively rare compared to the other barrel lengths. It the shortest barrel length that allowed for a full length ejector rod.

Essentially you have an FBI Special in .38 Special instead of .357 Mag.

The Smith's are all obviously coming and so is the Hi Power, so I think it definitely comes down to the Sistema, the Mk2, and the Tanfoglio for that final slot with those first 4 slots being easy to lock down.

From a purely "what guns would I want?" perspective I'd probably take that Tanfoglio target. I've always wanted to try one of their nicer models I've heard good things. Not too interested in the Rossi, maybe the Sistema would be good trade fodder, but the Mk2 is an interesting one because that model of gun is plentiful and cheap BUT they are also very easy shooting and get out to the range often. If this is something you're inheriting from a dear loved one I might take the Mk2 simply because I'll get to cherish their memory often, forever. Might get to start a new shooter on it even and wouldn't that be special?

So I dunno, the Mk2 calls out to me as a really great memento that raises it a notch or two, while the Tanfoglio is probably the best shooter of the remainders.

  • Smith and Wesson 357 highway Model 28-2
  • Smith and Wesson 4506-1(pristine condition)
  • Smith and Wesson 539
  • FM Hi Power(Argentina)
  • Ruger Mark 2
  • Tanfoglio Witness Target

Just to pick ones I own and like a lot...

Ruger Mark II is a lot of fun to shoot.
My S&W Model 28 has a sweet, sweet trigger.
I like all of my Tanfoglios a lot, and the target model is nothing to sneeze at.
A nice Rossi 720 is a joy to shoot. Mine is one of my very favorites. They are not easy to find or inexpensive. They were made only for a few years and have something of a cult following.
For the other one I would decided whether I liked the Hi Power or the 1911 better.

Also, the H&R is not very expensive on the used market. You could keep something fancier and pick up a used Sportsman for not very much money.

  • Ruger Mark 2 - Everyone needs a nice 22 autoloader- keeper.
  • Smith and Wesson 357 highway Model 28-2- How could you NOT want this? And I'm not even that into wheelguns.
  • Smith and Wesson 4506-1(pristine condition) Plenty of 45's if you keep the systema and the SA. I would pass.
  • Smith and Wesson 539 - Another old S&W that falls in the "nice to have" category. Keeper.
  • Tanfoglio Witness Target (40 caliber, like new) Italian clone of a czech pistol, in 40. No thanks.
  • FM Hi Power(Argentina) These things sold for $200. My dad had one, and the front sight flew off after less than 1,000 rounds. No thanks.
  • Sistema Colt (trigger is not original, maybe other stuff replaced as well) These are great 1911's, and their value has increased a bunch over the years. Keeper.
  • Rossi M720 Brazilian wheelgun. You are getting an heirloom S&W 28. Pass.

You guys are great I really appreciate all the feedback.

I'm probably going to drop the Mark 2 and Woodsman. I can just buy those later

I also thinking of dropping the 539 as I already have the FM Hi-Point and personally own a CZ75.

So I went back and looked at the collection and I noticed a 3 screw Blackhawk 357.

I'm not a huge fan of guns with gates as I already own a old model single six and it's kinda a pain to load and shoot.

But seeing as I was going to pass on the 28-2, I thought I'd get the forums feedback before we sell it.

Oh also there's a
Smith and Wesson 15-3 38 special
Smith and Wesson 14-2 38 special
Smith and Wesson Model 3(I think)
and a safety hammer less

Not really interested in these as the first 2 seem redundant with what I already have and the second 2 are less for shooting and more for collecting.

But again, I might be crazy so let me know.

Thanks again

In that case, take the 3 original S&W's (Model 28, 4506 and 539) then add the Model 15-3 and 14-2. If you ever decide to sell, all of these would be in high demand. They are also great handguns that would provide years of enjoyment shooting and loading for (assuming you handload). Wish I was presented with a dilemma like yours.
