I have been reading recently about a new option for 2020 about online handgun permit training. My wife found what appears to be a good class through a group that I know fairly well for $39 and then it looks like once that’s done then it’s just a $65 application fee, and the permit is good for 8 years. Seems too good to be true. Anybody familiar? Has anybody taken a TN online class and have a recommendation?

West, do you have a link to the official site in Tn? or is this just something in the talking stage and not something that is currently available?
I Would think there has got to be a lot of interest in this sort of option....

You have more restrictions and you have less state recipriocity on the new "standard" permit.

The shooting qualification is not that difficult for enhanced. The class is about 8 hours.

B29 Reduce Size Silhouette
20 x 3 yards
20 x 5 yards
10 x 7 yards
70% 7-Ring or Better

My Lil' Sister took an "Intro to Handguns" class with about 25 rounds fired.
Then a 1 Hour "Select a Handgun" Class with 40 rounds fired. That was her total experience before the class.

With her new .380EZ she scored 100%.

1. Basic instruction in good fundamentals.
2. A little dryfire practice.
3. A pistol that fits you well.
4. Power that suits your skill level.

You can shoot qualifying with a .22 RF if you choose to.

Yes, but a 90 minute class at your convenience from home when the kids are asleep is a lot easier than an 8 hour class with the pregnant wife watching the kids after I take a day of vacation or blow a weekend to make the 8 hour class work.

True. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the difference and the drawbacks.

I took the original post as your wife being the proposed participate and made a assumption that she might be new to shooting and intimidated by the qualification. In retrospect that was likely a sexist assumption and I apologise.

Actually it goes both ways. She wants to do it too, and she will carry a Glock 42 which she is unbelievable with. Golf balls are not safe within 50 yards. She picked the gun out and has never looked back, there is not even potential to find something she shoots better.

I would have went for the new permit had it been available when I got my permit years ago. Concealed carry only, I only carry concealed, and $65 for 8 years vs $100 for the enhanced permit. Plus 90 minutes at my computer vs a day in class and 50 rounds at the range. When I took my class their where people at the range part that looked like they had never fired a gun before, but they passed. Looking at the reciprocity list the only state that does not honor the new permit is North Dakota.

I’m pretty sure that I’m about to spend $208 between myself and my wife doing the online classes and permit applications. I will let y’all know how it goes.

Virginia has had online training for a number of years. It's ridiculously easy. The new antigun legislature is trying to abolish it.

The biggest opponents of online training are -- you guessed it -- firearms instructors.

I did find a site that offers the course for free. You have to buy the certificate at the end but at least you get to see the whole course.

That new on line permit is the worst thing that could have happened to Tennessee. It raises a red flag to all the other states that gave us reciprocity based on the full length class we previously had to take.

Some years ago when Tn. adapted 18-20 year olds with a military background the ability to carry, 8 states refused to recognize reciprocity with this age group. Minnesota and Washington dropped Tn. completely instead of simply disallowing 18-20 year olds.

It is clear to see how a change like this from Tennessee's standard permit practice can make a major change in how other states view Tn. With the stroke of a legislative pen, it would be a lot easier to drop Tn. completely than to have to weed through subtle law changes and for a state to be subject to potential law suits from improperly accused people.

As previously mentioned, North Dakota dropped the concealed only permit and there are other states looking into it also.

The RINOS in Nashville fell short of making Tennessee a Constitutional carry state and are using this legislation as a buffer between a full class carry permit and the Constitution. Permit less carry is only legal in the state in which the person resides, that is clear cut.

Anyone wanting to read about this weak and somewhat stupid change can do so on the Tennessee Firearms web page.
