Good evening Gents....
Finished my first AR15 build. Built a few PCC’s in 9mm so I’m fairly familiar but this was my first attempt at a 300 BLK. Used Coyote Alumahyde on the furniture BTW, think it came out pretty well for FDE.

Not sure why, but the selector switch almost free spins between SAFE and FIRE. It works as it’s supposed to in both positions, but if you rattle the gun it floats between the 2. I checked the detent and the spring twice, removed the pistol grip and reinstalled, but still no joy. Everything is the way it’s supposed to fit, except it floats. Any help as to what may cause this or what I can do to fix? The gun will work as is, but roaming the woods hunting won’t make for a safe situation.

Any help from you all would be TRULY appreciated.

Thanks!!

Check the spring and detent pin that is feed from the pistol grip. When removed the spring and pin can fall free. You may have the pin flipped. Also check for obstruction in the hole. The spring normally hangs about 3/8" below the receiver. May check to make sure the safety is machined right.

Thank you. The detent should fall out freely? When I removed the pistol grip the spring came out but the detent is stuck in there. I see the flat side so it’s inserted correctly, but it doesn’t come out and I can’t figure out how to get it out either.

Can it be pushed up manually so that that safety/fire lever works correctly? If so, check spring. If not, check hole for pin. If stiff or binding, ream hole.

I’ll try that in the morning thanks. Will use a punch to see if I can hold it up there with enough pressure and let you know.

I had this same problem on a build once. In my case I knew there was problem as soon as I put the detent in. I was able to get it out by tapping the Lower on a pad on my bench. After getting it out I cleaned out the detent hole in the Lower with oil and a drill bit. It didn’t take much to clean it out.

This is another little problem that doesn’t get discussed or mentioned often. I have never seen it on a Youtube video.

Also check that you have the correct spring. I have seen where people have installed a detente spring.
Also check the safety lever itself to make sure that it has the proper indents for the plunger.
It the safety lever is bad, I have extra sitting around.

Thank you both. Least I know what I’m looking for and what it could be. I’m gonna get into it here in a few and see what I find. Will let you both know. And thanks for the offer Gunny...much appreciated.

SOLVED! I managed to get the detent out by banging it on a pad (thanks BSA1). I pulled the specs on a raw lower and found that the detent hole is actually TWO sizes. From the top inside it’s 1/8” all the way through to the selector hole and then 5/32” to a depth of 3/16 from the flat surface where the grip seats. Turns out I didn’t have exactly 1/8” on the inside shelf. Not sure how that happened, but once I opened it up by hand turning a 1/8” drill bit ever so gently, it opened up and the detent was able to raise. I lubed it up nice and now it functions just like it’s supposed to.

Thanks again gents for pointing me in the right direction and telling me what to look for. Hopefully this info may help someone else down the High Road....

Really appreciate it!
