Best for $ is Definitely Zastava O pap if you can find one buy it right away if it's under 900.

I hope you guys are joking about WASR
Those are pure crap and more of a rattle than a rifle.

I also don't really think you can consider an american-made AK to really be an AK I mean come on guys let's be serious...

If you can get your hands on a molot vepr that's what I'd go for.

I'm currently selling a Molot VEPR AK-74 for less than $900 and I am convinced the AK-74 is better than an AK-47 and I've had several of both. The round is just inherently more accurate and less recoil but you do sacrifice a tiny bit of punch. Anyway the Russians play chess and they switched to the AK-74.

Someone is selling a melot vepr AK-47 for $1,300 and that's ridiculous.

Get Zastava they're the best bang for the buck
What about the new ZPAP
Best 762 shooter I own! Smooth as silk, lighter then an AK too.

Oh those are nice and I'd love one it's just the price of those turns me off, but one of these days I'd love a Vz.58

I don't think psa did as well there but they aren't saying, lol. Until psa gets their junk together they are selling you AK s cheap for range toys. If the chips were down I'd grab a wasr before a psa. I doubt psa will ever become sought after ak but I hope I'm wrong.
I know PSA got off to a rocky start with AKs but what I'm hearing now is pretty favorable

I can't speak about current production because I've had my WASR 10 for 10+ years. It doesn't have a beautiful finish and the wood looks like hell, but it's more accurate than I am shooting offhand and it has never once jammed or failed to fire.

There are no doubt better finished and more accurate AK's available, but if you want bughole accuracy, beautiful wood and finely finished metal, an AK probably isn't the best choice to begin with.

The AK is about reliability, and my el cheapo WASR delivers that in spades.
My first AK was a wasr and despite other peoples issues mine was just fine, I just cant see paying 700+ for the same rifle I got for 500 years ago except now it dosen't even have the bayonet lug for some reason

Zastava is most under the radar Best bang for the buck by Far
They're not band but I haven't seen them be imported for a couple years.
The n-paps are on used market regularly and are OK and easily Superior to a wasser 10.
The O-Paps come with grenade sights and beefed-up trunnions and have no shake or rattle at all and make a wasr10 look like a toy.

If you want to buy American buy an AR or Ford but not an AK

AK-74 ammo is not much more expensive at all than AK-47 there are just fewer options readily available but there's plenty of it around cheap if you know where to look.
The AK-74 gives you the best of both worlds between an AR and an AK all the reliability of an AK and the accuracy of an AR almost.

I'm definitely not opposed to a 74, I've always kinda wanted one, and after seeing PSA's 74 at shotshow I'm waiting to see how it is

That's like wanting a Ferrari and getting a Camaro

If it aint from the Soviet Bloc or a Mac 10 it's just not an AK in many people's book.

Count me among the WASR fans. Mine is about five years old, sights are straight, never a malfunction of any kind. I did replace the blond wood with Russian laminate.

I ain't a hater I just want an affordable AK that isn't junk. Like it used to be. So hopefully PSA will deliver. WASRs used to be junk, now they are "combloc AK" and Century and potentially PSA is junk. Before WASR hate there were guys saying Polytechs and MAKs, a lot of the AK's floating around at the time, were junk. I've been eyeing the PSA AK-P. I like a compact SBR like AK but if it's an AK I should absolutely be able to count on it 100%. Other guys can be guinea pigs for now.

My first AK was a wasr and despite other peoples issues mine was just fine, I just cant see paying 700+ for the same rifle I got for 500 years ago except now it dosen't even have the bayonet lug for some reason

I never got the bayonet lug and cleaning rod obsession but I will say I have rifles I paid 700+/- for back when WASRs were 450-500 bucks that have probably doubled in value. Had I known how the game was gonna play out I probably would've sucked it up and went with AR's. It's too late to turn back now that's why I'm hoping in the next year I can make a decision on that PSA.

$20 per case more for cases of GT, which ain't bad if you are committed to it. But not readily available on every ammo shelf, if there is there is usually less of it. Fewer mags. Fewer guns to choose from. And if you want light fast bullet an AR is probably cheaper at this point but that wouldn't be any fun.

It's my understanding the new WASR being sold are good and from Romania , in fact with the next election coming I may get another AK and haven't decided on WASR or PSA yet but leaning toward WASR

Saw a Hungarian SA-85M AK for a buy it now price of $850 recently on GunBroker. I have 6000 rounds through mine and it's very well finished with nice wood. Change the thumbhole for regular stock and grip and voila! PSA is gaining traction and learning from gen 1&2 with their gen 3 and soon to be gen 4.

They threw the ban on the russian saigas, and no chinese imports, Bulgarian seem to be drying up....that leaves the wasrs the zastavas and the US builds seems like. US companies are not building to same spec as the old commie rifles. Might be getting close enough for us plinkers. I don't like paying someone to beta test their product. Used commie rifle excellent condition or new wasr. I just dont have enough first han experiencenwith the zastavas though I am sure they are great. some of those had a high comb on the stock which made seeing the irons difficult for me. Good luck.

AK Operators Union on youtube does a pretty good job of testing rifles. Does 5000 round endurance testing with cleaning and inspection at intervals. From what I can see, US made AK's are improving. I think the last PSA rifle he tested did pretty good. You can get one of them under $600 on their site which is cheaper than most other options.

I guess the Zastava rifles might be more expensive, but they will be importing and producing new guns. I have an N-PAP that has held up well. I am waiting to see how the new AK74 clones hold up.

IMO, former combloc new production is just as capable of cutting corners and producing crap rifles as anyone else. The cheap surplus rifles out of Soviet inventories are gone or unavailable. I wouldn't trust any new production rifle just based on where it was made.
