Medium budget chronograph?

Agreed,
Regarding this chrono thing, they are nice to have but definitely a want vs a need kinda like a consentricity gauge, use it once or twice then it grows mold.

Can be used as much or as little as needed depending on what you're doing. (1) I seem to be constantly working up new loads and finding new powders and projectiles. (2) It is helpful to find comparable combinations AND to verify lot to lot consistency of powders. For those that need one, it's invaluable.

I have no doubt that mine will likely see long periods of disuse, but so far, a month or two has been the interval.

I use my crony every time I shoot. It's nice to know what velocity is when you have a what the heck shot. I have my own 300 yrd range so setup is not a problem.

If your concern about shooting it, get your self a bore laser to aid is setting it up. I've noticed on mine if I place the crony closer than 15' I get some strange readings off my rifles from time to time. Handgun I setup at 10'.

If I had a range I could go when ever that would justify it more but I keep losing places to shoot because the owners have passed away. I'll have to join the range so that's $160 gone there.
Perhaps the range you speak of has a program for members that wish to work off part of the dues.
All this Chrono talk has me brushing the dust off mine for a range trip with a fresh battle cry!
Thanks Gents.

Yep, it’s just a measuring device. Some people might use calipers, micrometers, feeler gauges or even a tape measure everyday and some people would never use one in their lifetime.

I was trying to remember the specific chronograph I have at the farm, because I forgot to bring one with me one time.

I couldn’t find it because they don’t make it anymore but it’s the pro chrono jr.

Basically a stripped down version of what they offer now, much like the F1 Shooting Chrony. It was $35 off eBay and looked like it was new in the box, likely from someone that used it just once or twice before putting it back in the box

Okay I know I'm bumping an older thread but yesterday was my first time out with my Prochrono DLX bought late last year. Heavily overcast evening.

The chronograph is awesome! I love the Bluetooth connectivity to my phone. No need to watch the chrono screen after every shot. Had my phone on the bench with me (connected by Bluetooth) and it (my phone) displayed and verbally told me the velocity of every round after firing.

Was at a loss when it suddenly stopped recording/displaying velocities but figured out that it was because it was near dusk.... On (like I said) a very overcast day.

I've seen lighting kits for sale for chronographs but even more intrigued by the DIY light setups. Will be doing this in the near future but very happy with the way the chrono performed when it did.

@troy fairweather I'd definately recommend the ProChrono DLX

I think the lighting kits are pretty cheap, but like to see what you come up with. Getting my dlx is on the back burner right now, hope to get it by spring.

A few decades ago my BIL had signed up for a science project that I became involved in and after teaching him how to safely work a mill and a lathe (I know it would have been easier to just do it all for him but it was a “teaching how to fish” time for me) we wound up in the dark and in need of chronographing the device.

I made a loop out of white cardboard and set the chrono on the seam and pointed a 90 degree flashlight towards the top, worked perfect.

Actually it worked so well that’s when I started my “no screens, on overcast days” testing. Now it’s my preferred method.

I used 2 of the Harbor Freight LED lights stuck to the bottom of the sun shades.
They have a magnet and I just used some old magnets from dead hard drives to hold them in place.
If you look you can usually find a coupon for a free one from HF.

Seemed to work ok when I tested it in the dark.

I like jmorris's plan as well.
