You got a lot of numbers in there, and 73% of people don't understand mathematics. The other 2/3rds don't care.

Back in 2005 when i was a poor 19 year year old on a fixed income with 2 dead end jobs. I had a remington 700 BDL with a 30 dollar symmons scope from walmart. it took me since i was 17 to save enough for the rifle. Had no money for a good scope before deer season. After dialing it in at 100 yards (hunting in maine is most likely going to be under 30-40 yard shots). I tried it at the 1000 yard range. I got 12" groups at that range with a 30 dollar scope. I was not used to shooting long range at all. If i had any skill, i have no doubt that the groups would have been alot less then 12".

I would not trust a $100 dollar scope today. I had bad luck with a nikon pro staff scope.

The OP is shooting 1000 yards with a Ruger.... your dreaded nemesis.... with $100 scope.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make by mentioning $5000 rifles and being good enough for air guns to 100 yards.

Point is you spend good money in putting together a ELR rifle, then outfit it with a middle of the road scope.

And he got lucky with the ruger lottery......but I will admit that the RPR punches above its weight......but rest assured the bean counters will figure out a way to save a few quarter pennies here and there and it will follow the mold of all ruger arms.

I'm not arguing with you, as I don't know what your experience with rugers have been.
I've owned 3 Americans (and worked with a couple more), and a Hawkeye, and none were more than moa guns.

Ive never seen (just realized this got cut off) a pred that didn't shoot pretty well either, and there are a bunch here.

I will. And furthermore...

Bwahahahahahaahhaa!
And yet we have video proof to the contrary!

And you don’t like ARs or Creedmoor or anything anyone else likes.

He’s shooting an American Predator, that would be a RAP. The bean counter cheap one...
Perchance your karma had something to do with your lottery luck?

Not trying to be hard on you, just don’t fall into a rut...

this is a very strange thread to me.

given the list of gear in the OP, why is the title of the thread and focus on how much a cheap scope costs? given how far off the first miss was in the video, i don't think it proves anything. why don't we talk about the phone skope or the other interesting items? or how in the heck they put a target on that hillside (maybe it's not as steep as it appears in the video?) i'd most like to hear about what the winds are like at that location and if he gets much vertical

Probably just how the titles worded focused every on the ever lasting cheap/expensive scope war......

Anyway, the questions you bring up ARE way more interesting. I've never shot or hunted on Kauai, but I've seen the Waimea canyon, and some of the surrounding terrain. Believe me making a hit at that range, much less a first round hit on a windy day would be very, very, good shooting.

I'm pretty sure he's shooting at a rock, but I'll let OP clear that one up.
About once a decade or so, someone dies hunting or hiking around there from falls. It's steep and the rocks and shale are loose. We have some areas similar to that on Molokai, and I've made the mistake of taking the shortest route back to the truck.....

I think to some degree the OP misses the point about better optics.

We used to kill 1,200# steers for slaughter with a cheapie .22 single shot. Just because it worked in ideal situations doesn’t mean it’s the optimum for all conditions. David killed Goliath with a sling. I don’t think you want to go to battle with a sling

It isn’t that they won’t be adequate sometimes under ideal conditions. The worse the conditions, the more a high dollar scopes shows it’s worth.

As Taliv noted, show something that adds to our knowledge base

The point of the video is that you don't need to spend thousands of dollars on your rifle and optic to play at 1,000 yards. For my 1st shot I was guessing the holdover as my BDC doesn't go out to 1,000 yards. Once I figured out the holdover that scope did it's job! The Nikon Buckmasters II 3-9x40 is one of the best bang for the bucks out there. I have them on all of my rifles. I'm not the kind of person who likes to spend thousands on optics. I'd rather buy another firearm or ammo. The Nikon does everything I need it to and then some. The target is approximately a 16" diameter rock that was already on the cliff side (measured with the reticle of more expensive optics that my friends have).

If you don’t see the value of rifle users posting videos of their guns doing stuff on a firearms forum, you’ve missed the point...

Says I, as I watch all the multitude of videos of the high end optics shooting in terrible conditions, posted up by all the other fellow members here. It’s a wonder we have the bandwidth....:scrutiny:

Average Joe: “Hey, gang! Check out this clip of me shooting at a thousand yards! Cool, huh?”

Jack wagons: “Those are not tough conditions. Let’s see how your cheap scope does upside down in the rain...”

o_O

Didn't Nikon recently announce that they're discontinuing all rifle scope manufacturing? You might want to pick up a few more if you really like their products. I wish I'd bought more Zeiss Conquest MC RZ600/RZ800 scopes before they were discontinued.

The topic of how much you "need" to spend on a scope for a given application is always a contentious one, as is the discussion of how much to spend on a rifle. Fortunately fun can be had at virtually any price point. In addition, the OP is having fun with a rifle in a state that's becoming increasingly anti-gun so that alone is a win. I'm not sure that shooting at rocks across the canyon would sit well with local LE and definitely not with the lawmakers in that state but it makes for a fun video.

I spent a week in a cabin up near Kokee State Park many years ago, driving up and down the mountain looking into Waimea Canyon every day and it's a special place for sure. The islands are known for their trade or Kona winds so most times you shoot you have to deal with the wind. There must be all kind of wind changes in an around the canyon. I used to shoot F-Class matches at the Marine base in Ewa Beach and it was always windy.

I lived in Hawaii for many years and miss many things about it, but certainly not the anti-gun culture which is getting worse by the year.

As I see it, the OP came with pedestrian equipment rated adequate at best for the task in front of him and the set up wasnt dialed in when he arrived.

Within a few shots, he's make'n hits at a 1000 yards. Good job rat107.

IMO, the point too many are missing is that it's a 1010 yards if you count his smile. :D
