Following my annual tradition of making sure that my tax return is spent before I get it... I've got a question!

Which 10mm do I actually want? I'll give you my criteria, and hopefully you folks will chime in on what you've experienced!

Uses:
Shooting at the range. Always fun.
Concealed carry during winter. You know, jackets and such.
Perhaps matches like USPSA (handloaded wimpy ammo, just to major specifications) or 3-gun. Probably not though.
Gun for those predators. After all, eastern KY is grizzly country (not really, but a good excuse, right?). I do visit the northwestern states fairly frequently. And with only ten shots in a California magazine, they had better do some damage. Why not 10mm?

There you go, in order of importance.

What I'm looking for:
No plastic. Unless you have one you really like. Nope, no Glock. Not even the Poly 80. Don't like them. Same with the Tanfoglio/EAA plastic guns. They are too wide right where my thumb is. I can't reach the safety quite right.

A nice trigger. I can change sights, grips, etc. easily. I can even change a trigger if I feel like it, but it's too much work for this one. I want it to be pretty nice out of the box. Too many projects right now.

Double stack. You 1911 guys will have to give me double stack opinions.

Contestant number one!

Tanfoglio/EAA full-ish size.

Contestant number two!

Tanfoglio again, but smaller. I'm thinking this will be better for carry, not so great for the range. I'm leaning away from it, but if someone has one, and it turns out to be plenty big enough to get a good handle on it, by all means, let me know!

Contestant number three!

Rock Island double stack 1911ish thing. Maybe the one without the rail instead. My concern with a 10mm 1911 is the chamber support issue. I know the Colts had issues, and I'm sure others did. What's the deal with this? Does anyone here have experience with Rock Island's 10mm 1911s?

My affinity toward CZs and their copies from around the world started with a desire for DA/SA pistols. I have now found that I rarely use the DA, so 1911s are again open to me. However, there is also a "want" of a USPSA "Open" gun, (Czechmate?) that I haven't decided on yet. So, funds may be relocated to an open gun instead of a 10mm.

Thanks for the advice on what you would do! I'm hoping this thread will be a little more fun than the glut of "they're coming to take them away!" threads.

This is a very subjective decision, but sticking to your criteria and being as factual as I can I will give my input.

For the comparison I am offering, I am not 100% sure of my premise, but I am confident of it.

The premise is that the RI 10mm dbl stack (I don’t own) is the same size as my RI 9mm dbl stack. I presume this because my EAA Witness 10mm is the same size as my Witness 38 Super.

I have medium sized hands. By looking at the two photos you can see that my thumb wraps about 1/4 inch further around the grips on the Witness 10mm dbl stack versus the RI 9mm dbl stack. Thus, my hands have a tad more purchase power on the Witness.

Does this mean the Witness is a better choice for me? Well, this isn’t about me, it’s about you. Hope this helps.

Fantastic! You've got experience with both! I do believe the frame size is the same for the 9mm and the 10mm/.45 RIAs. Size is good to know. With the hammer back, and you gripping the firearm as you would shoot it, where does the trigger hit you on both guns? And which pistol has a better single action trigger?

Now, the big question... on your 10mm Tanfoglio/EAA, what's the brass look like? Is the chamber supported fully? A picture of the removed barrel with a cartridge in it would be fantastic. If anyone (NorthBorder?) has this for the RIA (either double stack or single stack, I don't think that would matter), that would be great too.

My right hand measures nine inches from tip of thumb to tip of fifth finger. Don't know if that is a useful measurement though.

From what I've seen, the CZ 10mm is a custom shop conversion. And I haven't seen a whole lot about it. Unfortunately.

Not one of your options, but you might not be aware of it as it was just introduced at SHOT:

SIG 320 10mm from GGI
Bruce Gray of Grayguns engineered this piece working with the factory. They are offering it through GGI rather than as a catalog item

I voted the full size Tanfo, but I plan to order a CZ 97 10mm conversion when available from CZC Shop.

I own the RIA 10mm double stack 1911. I like it a lot. I have medium size hands and I was surprised how comfortable the double stack felt. YMMV. I think it's a lot for the money.

I have always liked the look of the EAA witness metal frames, but I have no experience with them.

I owned an RIA doublestack. After an initial break in period (300ish rounds) it functioned almost flawlessly. Almost.

It was the 6 inch long slide version with the 2 piece guide rode. The guide rod kept unscrewing itself so I sold it off.

Get the 5 inch version & you shouldn't have that issue. It's a LOT of gun for the $.

The double stack Springfield XDm 10mm is on the radar. Unfortunately, I "made too much" this year and will owe around $5k, so those on the list will have to wait.
I love it when working harder and earning more forces one to pay more taxes. What the moral of that story?

I recently purchased the XDM 10mm Springfield OSP version and added a Venom red dot. It’s a great package.

But the OP doesn’t want a “plastic” gun.....

That's the exact route I was eyeing. Any issues with hot ammunition such as that from Underwood? The recoil from some of my hotter handloads and many Underwood options activate the slide stop on my RIA Ultra FS and lock the slide back on a live mag. I've purchased a sacrificial slide stop to modify that remedied the problem. I'd like the next 10mm I buy to be ready for hot 10mm (because I'm of the belief that all 10mm should be hot by nature).

No help.......I have only shot S&B 180 grn FMJ so far. 150 rounds later, it’s been perfect. I just got in some Sig V-Crown 180 grn HP, and have the Underwood 220 grn hardcast on order. I do like the fact that the XDM has a fully supported chamber.

I'm sorry, but there really is no better doublestack 10mm than the Glock.

Did you pay any attention to his selections at all?

Glock doesn't make a steel frame hammer fired gun.

As to Glock being the best 10mm that is highly subjective but I would be willing to bet STI would argue that point.

Yeah, Glock lovers.....oh please....give me a break......

Yes, I read his criteria, doesn't want polymer frame, but there is no better doublestack 10mm than a Glock.

I like Glocks, certain Glocks, but I don't love Glocks.

Have you shot an STI 2011 in 10mm?

I have finally settled on my next 10mm and it’s going to be a EAA Witness Limited. I suggest you look closely at that pistol. Seems to be a whole lot of value for the money as it is a significant step up from the basic witness but not as significant of a difference in price.

a gray RIA double stack is what had me stumbling on that decision for so long, and I finally decided that I would rather have that pistol in the 9/22tcm combo.

Never heard of it before, but upon researching it's not worth 4 grand.

It's not in my budget either (although I have shot one) but I don't think the Glock is better.

I was simply pointing out that Glock isn't the answer to every question.

Neither is the M&P M2.0 Compact the best .40 S&W much as I prefer it to the G23. I would never say it's the best .40 S&W but it works for me. As I'm sure your G20 does for you.

No best exist, simply the best for you and your application.

Thanks for your response! If a polymer frame 10mm was going to be my next pistol I would look at the xdm first. I have two of them in 45 acp. They work for me and I shoot them much better than all of the glocks I have tried.
