I’ve been working up some different loads to see what will work best out of a Taurus 617 with a 2” barrel and had some Interesting results with AA#9.

By using the below powder recipes the AA#9 load with 15 grains of powder locked up the pistol and left some interesting marks on the brass. The hammer wouldn’t go back and the cylinder wouldn’t rotate unless I unlocked it.

the brass on the left was fired with the 15 gr load and the one on the right with 14.5 grains.

I think I’ll forgo any AA#9 loads for this and roll back to H110 which performed good without any issues

One thought, the Taurus has the hammer lock Allen screw but I wouldn’t think the recoil would lock that up. Then again stranger things have happened.

What do the primers look like? Were they starting to back out or are cratered? That might prevent the cylinder from rotating. Pics, please.

If you look at the accurate powder website load data for a 140gr you are at / over Max listed charge , maybe start lower and work up

I use #9 for a 2.75" Ruger Security Six 357 magnum with CCI 500 and 158gr XTP's or 158gr Nosler JHP I use 13.6-13.8gr of #9. I consider this to be a max load for this firearm.
I like JO JO's advise start low and work up. I would start at 13.5gr and work up in .2gr increments and try to keep the reloads at 70 deg. F

Yep, been loading for years and know the signs. Followed the Speer offerings and stopped when it felt odd.

Just wanted to share that even though the max load listed is what Speer recommends, it doesn’t mean you can safely shoot that load out of your firearm. Work your loads up slowly until you feel/hear/see the signs.

Found a load the 617 likes. Went down to Unique with the 135 gr Gold Dots. Will toy with the load a little more and see what their doing they a chronograph when I get a new one. My old F1 gave up the ghost today. Won’t register anymore
