Knives: Tools or Weapons?

Both. The other day the repairman was working on some plumbing as well as the HVAC guy. Plumber needed a piece of insulation. HVAC guy had it. But he needed a knife to cut it. Neither had one. My Delica served. It also opens up recalcitrant bags of chips.I do have a dedicated rescue knife in the car.

I consider them TOOLS first. I do more general cutting than defending.

Also note that "weapon" is a class of "tool". Yes, some knives are designed to serve primarily as weapons.

This old Kershaw Echo is my daily carry that rides in a horizontal kydex sheath just to the right of my belt buckle. It's a cutting tool, that could, be pressed into service as a weapon. This is most knives... TOOL.

This Boker Applegate-Fairbairn stays on my warbelt, again, in a kydex sheath I had made. It's a dedicated weapon, that could be pressed into service as a cutting tool if need be. WEAPON. I also have the red rubber trainer.

I had that dagger for a bit and sold it as it was just a safe queen so to speak. Regret it a bit.

If I have to use my SAK Hiker in self-defense, I am pretty sure I am in a bad situation. :D My EDC knives are more tools than weapons, for sure.

Almost any tool can be used defensively.
Indeed, the mind is the weapon, everything else is tools. MY EDC knife (Gerber 06 Fast) is used mostly for cutting boxes and packaging open; it hasn't been used defensively, and I hope it never has to. I'm sure it's up to the task.
I too have been carrying my Leatherman more, Armored farmer.

Im willing to bet that most of ya'll on here carry a knife, we carry for a variety of reasons. I am in the EDC group on FB and many people consider the knife as a non weapon, that confuses me a bit, I always thought of my knife as part of my self defense weaponry on hand at any given time while Im out. What do yall think? Do you place the knife in the same category as your firearm?
My knife is a TOOL, and that encompasses all the categorys you choose.

My EDC blades are a larger lockblade [ example,ZT's and Benchmades ] and a smaller assisted opener like a BM Berrage mini, and a SAK.

I use the "tool aspect" so many times a week that I could not count.

I have used the 'tool' as a weapon on VERY few occasions.Primarily when I was younger ------------ much younger.

But love the rules that Gibbs has on NCIS [ the show now stinks ] and number 9 is " ALWAYS HAVE A KNIFE ".
