i looked at this ruger # 1 last Wednesday and after thinking about it for a week, I went and bought it today. it was dirty and full of dried oil(I cleaned it and the scope(leupold var1-x 111 1.75x6) it has a ex bore with minor use marks and a missing rear sight blade(I called ruger and they are sending one free). over all very happy and can,t wait to see how it shoots. serial number 133-01144.

Of all the rifles I've owned in my 3/4 of a century, a No 1 was the Number one. Mine was a .243 and a buddy had a .458 that he used for BPCR shooting. It was fun to help him "unload" the two boxes of factory rounds to get brass for reloading.

I'd love to have one of those someday. Don't forget a range report because I'll be looking for one!!

I missed a Number 3 in 45-70 for $125 at a gun show about fifteen years back. Probably for the best as my Rio Grande kicks the snot out of me and that would have been even lighter. My Rem rolling block with 30" 1 1/8 Oct barrel was a pussycat. I can give you a moa load but it is dirty.

I wanted a 45/70. Got a good deal on a no. 1 in 7mm rem mag. Still a nice gun but I sure wish it was a 45/70.

Very nice.
I'd love to have a #1 in 45-70. #1s are hard to find used and cost so much new and they come out in a run of certain calibers, sometimes you won't see the one you want released but every few years if you're lucky . last year there was a run of stainless 45-70 #1s that weren't on their site but I saw on a distributors page but they were big bucks and my wife would know for sure.
Enjoy that rifle, she's a beaut

word got around to my gun room that my other 45-70,s are mad the new comer was getting all the press, so to keep a happy gun room here are my other six 45-70,s. 1, the new ruger #1. 2, pedersoli sharps 74 target. 3, early 70,s marlin 1895. 4, ruger #3. 5, Winchester short rifle. 6, Winchester saddle ring carbine(I have two other carbines 30-40 krag and 38-55). 7, tc contender rifle barrel.

Pretty sweet! If you have any functional problems or action stiffness, you might want to take the action apart for a detail cleaning. I had to take mine apart to refinish the receiver -- it is a bit daunting the first time, and you'll want to be somewhere you can easily find small dropped parts. Replacing the ejector is a bit fumbly but it's not as hairy as it looks on paper.

Great find on a fine rifle and the chambering is a pretty good one too. While the Vari-X III may be a bit long in the tooth it should serve well and its magnification range makes for an ideal paired combo. Very nice.

If you are a handloader you will discover the .45-70 offers some delightful possibilities with cast bullets. The .45 options offered by Lyman and Saeco(Redding) range from light plinking bullets up to heavyweights for serious applications. Cast bullets are all I have ever loaded and shot in this #1. . I’ve had 3 number 1’s and the 45-70 was my favorite. The others were 375 H&h and a 458 Win Mag, with the latter being way to hard on the shoulder. Ruger number 1’s are great rifles, handle well and are very accurate. If your a reloader, running the bullet out to almost the lands can really pay off in better accuracy without any penalty of not feeding through mag/box. Have yet to run across a 7x57, would have to really considering getting another #1 if the price was right.

If your No 1 has the red recoil pad replace it asap. The old red pads looked nice but did nothing in the felt reoil department. Otherwise you got yourself a great rifle for pretty much any animal on the planet
