I turn 40 in a few months and I want to buy a .40 to mark the occasion. I already have three .40s - they are a SIG P229, an HK USP, and an HK P30. What should be my fourth .40?

Well you already have 2 or 3 of the best but I’ll make a suggestion anyway. How about a Glock 35 since you don’t have a longslide 40 or Glock in 40? There’s the beretta 96 or px4 storm also. Or maybe a cz p06, even though discontinued it still pops up here and there and is a great shooter. M&p’s in 40 can be had for good deals as well. I’ve seen FN FNX or FNS’s in 40 for sub $300 lately, which get decent reviews. Lastly there’s my person choice, a ppq 5” in 40. I could keep going all day long on good 40’s since I haven’t quite jumped off the 40 band wagon yet.

In not particular order:
Pardini GT40
Grand Power P40
Used, like new, Mauser M2
EAA Witness (Tanfoglio) race gun (Stock II, Limited, Match, something like that)
Beretta 96
STI Rangemaster, Trojan, Champion

I also would consider a CZ P06. Looked at one some time back but decided to go with it's 9mm brother, P01.

I'd go with a Sig p239 with a 357 Sig barrel for variety if I could find one. Just loved the way that thing shot, first one ragged hole in paper was with one. I do like this idea and looks like I am getting a single seven in a bit.

Some interesting ideas here. If I get another 10mm it'll be a 1911 (already have a 1006 & a G20). The question then would be which one?

Don't hold with putting autoloading cartridges in revolvers (or revolver cartridges in autos). The flintlock idea is neat, but I know nothing about them.

I would suggest Glock 22 (G23 for carry) with 40-9mm conversion barrel for cheaper practice or suppressor use with threaded barrel.

There are plenty of police trade-ins from $320 - https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/category.cfm/sportsman/police-trade-in-glocks

BCA conversion barrel for $43 - https://www.bearcreekarsenal.com/bc...-9mm-conversion-barrel-stainless-steel-finish

BCA threaded conversion barrel for $45 - https://www.bearcreekarsenal.com/bc...rel-stainless-steel-finish-threaded-unbranded

And they can be pretty good shooters too (If you are buying at LGS, dry fire and buy the one that does not jerk/move the front sight as much for more accurate pistol out of the box ;)). If you are buying police trade-in, somebody already spent the money to break-in the pistol and smooth out the trigger for you. :D:thumbup:

Some that I have and like:

S&W M&P
Glock 22
Beretta 96
A CZ or "CZ inspired" pistol (such as my Tanfoglio)
1911

The CZ's are probably my favorites. The S&W and Glock are still probably available as police surplus at very low prices. I got both of those and the Beretta that way.

I agree that if you get the Glock 22, you might as well get a 9mm conversion barrel and a G17 magazine while you're at it. That's the route I went. Mine shoots them both equally well.

I would be buying one of the single-stack S&W Gen3 models built on a .45 frame and with an under bored .45 barrel, e.g., 4013, 4014, 4053, 4054, or CS40 because they didn't start out as 9mm handguns. I own the last three models mentioned and they're all fine shooters, fit my hand well, and make a nice EDC choice. These single stack models are the ones that can be converted to 10mm.
