I think that “most” Americans lean left with their hearts and lean right for their freedom; I have absolute faith in the pendulum, it always averages the center over time.

The center is compromise. Compromise means restrictions are placed on our freedoms So the center has shifted left which is the new center ( the new norm). The left then begins screaming for new restrictions so we must find a new center which is, again, compromise with more restrictions.
Politically, compromise always means adjust to the left to some degree.
In my heart I lean right.

Fellows, behold all of the firearms regulations, restrictions and laws on the books - you have already compromised - you are the extreme - they are the extreme - the truth is somewhere in the middle. We are the firearms enthusiasts, the fringe, not the middle of the Bell Curve. DJT will help the cause but he will not be in office forever - the younger ones of our society are coming and they will vote and as the numbers shift, they will win. The question will always be, what will you do when they come - I sense that most on this forum will try and talk them to death.

In Illinois we got gun owner licensing in1968 with the FOID act. Several years ago CCW by court order, not the legislature. Now we have SS Red flag Law and Gun dealer licensing that
almost immediately put 50% of gun dealers out of business. We never compromise but liberal rulers go for the throat every time. There’s no comfortable middle ground with gun control. We alway move one step forward 2 steps back. Rest you die.

Some bright spark among the Democrats realized it might not be the best strategy to motivate the opposition in what will be a hotly contested election year. No fear, though. If the Democrats prevail in November, they'll be back at it with a vengeance.

So are any Virginia legislative seats up for re-election in November, given that they just installed the D majority just a few months ago?

No. Virginia state elections take place in odd years. The House of Delegates (the lower house) and the governorship are up in 2021; the Senate isn't up until 2023. Gov. Northam cannot run for a second consecutive term.

The same cast of players will be there for the 2021 legislative session, when they're going to try again for an AWB. They may have learned some lessons from this year's experience, but those lessons are not necessarily to our benefit. They may have learned to be smarter gun-banners.

I think they did some polling

No

The VCDL and citizens of VA did the work of getting people to write, email, call, sign petitions, schedule meetings, show up at townhalls/legislator's offices/committee meetings, pass 2A Sanctuary Resolutions, ... All the things that people need to do to make a change happen in the face of outside influences.

If you leave it to polling you loose.

Exactly. There was a hell of a lot of letter writing, emailing, phone calls, etc. I am very proud of the way true Virginians, and indeed true Americans from other states came through. Of course, it's not over yet, and I don't think anyone believes that it is.

One very positive thing has come out of this even if the Draconian gun "safety" laws do get passed - it woke up a lot of folks who, in the past, sat back and watched thinking, "this is Virginia, the land of the truly free, it couldn't happen here!" Let's hope our fight will be a good example for the citizens of other states to take action both in the state legislatures and at the polls that elect those legislatures.

Well I think you and I differ slightly on the word “polling”. Every letter written, every person at a town hall, committee meeting, or the state capital, every email, etc can be included in a poll. There’s more ways to poll something that Quinnipiac or Gallup.
