For Western action shooting, do the pair of pistols need to be the same caliner? And if not would a .22 rimfire be acceptable.

I am in the understanding that in all of the games the only thing allowed for adults is centerfire. Some game setups allow kids to use rimfire

I am certain there are exceptions though.

As Jim suggests, go to a match or two before doing anything. Go see what it's about and talk to folks. Then when you have a better feel for it, the rule book is online with all the categories and will make more sense.

Enjoy!

Yup
SASS allows .22 and .410 for Buckaroos under 14.
Otherwise minimum .32 and 20 ga.
Need not be the same caliber sixguns and carbine.

But go to a shoot. Lots of helpful folks with spare guns to loan.
10 4... i want to do some comps (and yes, watch some before) , i was wanting to get another SA rev but newer i want a high capacity .22 but if not allowed in adult comp was gonna get another to match what i got. (I know only 5 rounds for comp, alterior motive for the .22 tho)

Do you have a link for the rule book..... i cant seem to find.

There are several different shooting disciplines that use cowboy/Western guns. The largest is the Single Action Shooting Society. I’ve been shooting SASS matches for ten years and having a blast.

The website is www.sassnet.com where you can find affiliated clubs organized by state. You can also download the Shooters Handbook.

I enjoy introducing new folks to the sport. My advice is to find a local club and come out to a local match. There’s no charge for hanging out. Bring eye and ear protection. Here in the Southeast we shoot year round. In colder climes some clubs suspend matches during the Winter or even shoot on indoor ranges. The poor blighters.

Thanks for the info. I did finally find the rule book......looks like .22s as a second is a null idea. I got a .44mag already, i'll just find another (but newer for some of the other things like rapid firing) i will def check out for some local groups (i am in central Virginia) i may just have to do some driving. Not much here in Fredericksburg......plenty of places to shoot but no "cowboy" groups.

On the Clubs page you will see contact info for each club. Don’t hesitate to reach out and let them know that you are interested. Some clubs offer “practice days” or “new shooter clinics”. I’ve had new folks come out a couple of days before a match and help set up targets. It’s a good way to meet people.

I talked to my home club’s match director before I showed up at a match. He put the word out and the other shooters had extra gear for me to use.

Let me know if I can help you.

My understanding is that Ruger sponsors matches around the U.S. and just about everyone (young and old) uses Ruger .22 pistols. These are not cowboy action shoots but I've watched clips of them and seems everyone has a great time and some of the youngsters are incredible.

I hope you're using 44 Special in that hand cannon. Shooting 44 Mag through a match is going to be a handful real quick.

Cool thanks

Ruger no longer runs the Rimfire Challenge, NSSF did for a while, but now it's own organization.

Also see Steel Challenge, it has rimfire divisions.

I shot SASS years ago (alias: John Files Tom, SASS # 13998). My first exposure was the championships called End of Trail. They were held in Chino, Ca before they moved the championships to New Mexico.

I used two .45 Colt revolvers ( old Vaquero and a Uberti SAA clone, both 4 5/8”) a Win 1894 Legacy 24” .45 Colt and an old Lefever 16 ga SxS coach gun.

I had a lot of fun, but it just sort of petered out in me when my schedule switched to working weekend graveyards for a couple of years so I just couldn’t make SASS matches anymore.

I’ll recommend using one caliber, it’s a lot easier to reload one cartridge-load for all three and bring it to the range and set up for the stages than many loads-calibers. SASS has minimum-maximum load parameters so guys won’t game the system with parakeet sneeze loads or bring blaster loads that jack up the steel targets and send lead splash all over.

And like the others said; talk to participants, watch some matches and see for yourself what it entails. It’s a load of fun once you get started.

Stay safe.

If you only have one revolver check for an NCOWS club near you. They have 2 gun (pistol and rifle) 3 gun (two pistols and rifle) and 4 gun (pistols rifle and shotgun) categories. 2 gun is one of the more popular categories.

not sure what your 'rapid firing' thinking is, we are not allowed to fan a revolver.Otheer than than almost all the sixguns we use can be fired rapidly...we can and do 'slipfire' sometimes,by holding the trigger to the rear and thumbing the hammer.
