Just bought my first scope. Nothing fancy and not sure if I’ll like em. I’ve spent 20 years with out one but as my eyes get older I find my groups get bigger on the open sights.

I’m looking for a good precision based scope mount set up for an ar platform. My goal is good 100 yard groups. Nothing more. My normal hunting range in only about 125 yards at the most. Most often less.

Depending on what YOU want and are willing to spend. I really like the Aero mount, tho Ive used it only rarely, since my buddy dosent bring that gun out often. It's also the most expensive option IVE used..
The Burris Pepr mount is also a good mount for the cost.

Right now I'm playing with Monstrum so cheapo mounts and they have continued to be consistent, but not too shelf by any stretch of the imagination.

Had to edit that first part, it sounded like I've owned an aero mount, I haven't. I've used a gun with one on it a few times, and from that experience I really like it

I have a Burris PEPR QD on my AR and am happy with it. I didn’t get QD so I could take the scope off and then put it back on and keep the same POI. I’ve heard enough stories about PEPR QD mounts having a different POI when taken off and then reattached. I bought QD so if my scope broke I can take the scope off with no tools and use iron sights.

The Burris and Larue mounts are good to go. I also have a few Primary Arms mounts that are good also. Years ago I bought a Winchester brand (Chinese) mount from Walmart on a whim. It wasn't bad but didn't compare to the Primary Arms mount. The Winchester mount resides on my AR22.

I have both Leupold and Vortex cantilever mounts for 30 mm tubes, and an aforementioned Aero for 1". They all do the job. The Vortex has the largest amount of forward cantilever. I had issues with eye relief between different shooting positions when I had an fixed, A2 stock. I could never find a scope position that worked for everything. An adjustable stock solved that for me, being able to move the stock rather than the scope.

I'm a big fan of the Aero; light, sturdy, good machine work, and no protruding mounting nuts to snag on stuff. I haven't thrown it from a helicopter or run it over with a truck to see how well it survives, but it takes normal falls and bumps just fine.

Like anything, it depends on your budget and intended use.

I have Larue's and American Defense Recon mounts, both are on the expensive side, but they work well especially if you use the QD feature. They will return to zero, or close enough that it's within a click.

I've liked the Primary Arms Deluxe Mount. I did have an issue with stripping one of the screws when I mounted it on my AR, which was like 6 months after I'd bought it. The torque wrench I used was faulty so I over torqued it, not their fault. I messaged them and next day they'd send me out a replacement screw and nut no charge.

Wow. Thanks for the replies. Not I have more to research.

As a side note. Ive seen where people lap there scope rings on bolt action rifles. Is that needed or is there anything to gain from doing this on these style mounts listed above?

I’ve used the LaRue, the Burris PEPR and the ARMS.

The LaRue and the ARMS are my first and second picks followed by the Burris. Can’t really go wrong with any of them though.

There is more than one train of thought on this matter. I don’t lap and if the mounts need lapping they are faulty and need to be replaced. I’ve had to replace them once.

I've tried cheap stuff (brandless China $15) and medium priced stuff (warne and aero) and it has all worked fine. My favorite is the aero precision mount, and my recommended budget mount is the utg pro mount ($30-40) The utg and I recently had a dirt bike wreck where it went flying, and the zero didn't move. (Scope was a primary arms 1-6x24)

IIRC, I used a Warne aluminum combo mount+rings on my daughter's AR15. Solid piece of gear.

I have SWFA, RRA, and Aero on my ARs. Of those, based on each working fine I’d choose Aero for the weight and machining vs the others.

If you need QD or have the money to spend freely then LaRue, Samson, AD, GG&G would all do fine as well.

Vortex, Warne, and Aero are the 3 I favor, with Burris as a safe “punt option” behind the other 3 for their weight and bulk.

Something to consider is your own face. The Burris is .2” taller than the Warne and Vortex, so I personally end up reaching up to a Burris PEPR, but have a solid cheek weld as I should in the Warne and Vortex.

yeah that’s been one of my concerns. With the current mounts the scope is uber lower. So low I can not even have a rear iron sight. I also find I’m craning my neck over really hard to get a good position to view the cross hairs. Very uncomfortable. So the scope does need to come up.

yeah those UTG rings are "highs" you need something significantly taller, or to get really far down on the stock. personally IF im going with that style, and cost of ring, i use the weaver quadlock see thrus.
