Extra ammo while carrying

I admire your optimism.

Even on days when the sun shines, the birds sing, and I feel good about life, and consider every stranger a friend I haven't met, I still want three spare cylinder fulls.

With a semi-auto two spares magazines on my person generally satisfies me.

Which carrying case do you use with the speed loaders?

When I carried a revolver as my full time EDC gun I had two extra speed strips for it. I had a custom leather pouch made for it to hold the two speed strips. On my belt it just looked like a nondescript accessory pouch. The pouch ran me about $60 through an outfit called Tracker Leather from Sisters Oregon. It was ultra high quality and would last three lifetimes.

I don't carry a revolver but if I did I would carry one or two spares in split-six carriers. They are pouches that hold speedloaders and split the rounds over a belt to help reduce the bulk profile you will have with revolver spares vs semi auto magazines. They have been out long enough that you can get some custom ones made as well.

I used to, but no longer bring extra ammo or speed loaders or magazines. Although, I'm pretty low risk in where I go and what I do - so, just a hobbyist who brings something along so I'm not completely defenseless. I think Paul Harrel had a good video on this, and outside of extremely rare circumstances - reloading doesn't happen for every day folks, but he still recommended bringing either a speed loader or extra mag, since it was not really much more to carry. I still don't bother.

Every. Single. Time.

Not that good a shot, but mostly, stoppages. Even in a revolver, if you have to fix something you are likely going to dump some rounds and a reload is a lot easier than finding them.

And this:

This sealed the deal for me. I once carried my pistol around all day: empty, without knowing till I got back to the car. For self-loaders at least, carry a spare of the least reliable, easiest to change part.

25 230gr leave-me-alone pills, or 5+5+6 for the j-frame. It a very small marginal inconvenience.

I carry a 5 shot Ruger LCR and 2 speed strips. Both 6 round speed strips are loaded with 4 rounds each so that I have a tab at each end and a gap in the middle.

I only carry reloads on weekdays that end in y. Now being serious I always have a minimum of 2 reloads no matter what I am carrying some times more like with a J-frame Smith then often 2 speed loaders and a couple of strips as well. I have never talked to some one that had to use his carry gun and heard something to the effect of having had too much ammunition. I have been told on two occasions that they were stupid for not carrying a reload.

One of these days, I may find a speedloader pouch that works well. In the meantime, it's 2 speed strips in the front pocket.

I've been carrying a revolver lately. I have at least one speed strip in my pocket. If I'm wearing a jacket of some sort I will drop a speed loader in the pocket..
When i carry a pistol, I have one spare mag in my weak side pocket.
I'm a bit concerned about switching back and forth between revolver and pistol. My reloads go in different pockets. I need to choose.

The chances of being able to reload during a gunfight seem pretty low to me. Given the averages of 3-7 yards and 2-3 rounds fired (or whatever the stats are).

But if I were ever in a gunfight, ran dry, and had the opportunity to reload, I'd be glad to have some more ammo to put in my gun.

It would also be worth considering: If I ran dry and chose to run away, would I be pursued? And if I was, would I want more ammo to put in my gun? I think, yes.

I carry a speed strip in a Simply Rugged Most Versatile Pouch. Sort of folds around and on the belt. Looks like a small coin pouch or some such nondescript thing. Especially nice if you are concealed carrying a revolver in a pocket.
