410 shotgun vs .22 Lr Rifle single shot or 22 mag rifle single shot ?

I think Savage still makes a double barrel .22 over .410.

For defense I’d definitely recommend the 410 over any rimfire.

A .22 LR and a .22 Magnum are both rim fire cartridges but in a single shot, you should not have the risk of them jamming. In shotguns, they do make a .410 and what is useful is one with an exposed hammer so that you can tell if it is cocked. There are some decent self defense rounds in the .410 (mostly optimized for the handguns out there but can be used in a shotgun) but be aware that some of these may overpenetrate if you live in apartments with thin dry wall construction. Bird shot is not recommended for self defense so you are left with ball or discs loaded into a .410 shell.

The youth stock will be a bit shorter but useful if you want to use a slip on recoil pad if the existing one is too hard on your shoulder. They also make adult length stocks for around the same price point. You can also get one that allows you to swap barrels for about $150 between .410 and .22LR Stevens and Iver Johnson make models of this type as well.

If you do go single shot, practice with it as shotguns are not laser beams of death. You can develop some decent speed in reloading and it helps to have a buttcuff with reloads on the buttstock.

Well the .410 is hands down the winner for SD over the .22 rimfire calibers. Depending on what you can afford I would look at a .410 over/under or side by side to give you at least 2 rounds. The gun recommended by AIM1 is also an option. There are a couple companies that made/make this type of firearm. I am not certain what is being made today but if you could find one chambered in .410 and a pistol caliber such as .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum , that would work out well as they would also chamber .38 Special or .44 Specials. In a long gun the recoil of any of those pistol cartridges would likely not be a problem for you, and be close to the .410 recoil. No matter what, having that 2nd round would be an important asset.

I would get a .410 then use the personal defense .410 rounds designed for the Judge. Those break apart disks would be quite effective.

Of what you listed, the 410 is the winner, ballistically speaking. IMO, a better choice would be a Ruger 10-22 with a 25 round factory magazine loaded with CCI hollow points. It would be light, very accurate and reliable, and have negligible recoil, flash, and blast, along with considerable firepower "on board".

You didn't mention price range but you may want to look for a .410 pump shotgun Youth model. They are shorter/lighter overall than a full size and will give you 5 shots in the tube, 1 in the chamber. Single shots are cheaper but you get one shot, have to open it and put another shell in then close and recock it before firing again. With a pump you just shoot, pump and shoot 5 times before reloading.. Good luck.

Another option, although most expensive, would be the Rossi Circuit Judge. It's basically the 5 shot Taurus 410 gauge/45 Colt handgun but with a rifle stock and 16 in barrel.

Very safe and reliable with its double action revolver trigger and mechanism.

Without knowing more about your capability things like pump .410's are hard to recommend. Also a price range would be nice. I forget who makes them right now, but there is a pump .410 version of the Mossberg Shockwave and the Remington Tac-14. I am in a wheel chair and find long guns hard to maneuver from the chair. I also find my Tac-14 hard to handle and have installed an arm brace on it. I have not tested it with the arm brace yet. Mine is a 20 ga. and recoil was a problem with the pistol grip it came with. So a little more info from you (the OP) could help us give a wider range of options. Single shots are not great SD guns. Like I mentioned earlier if yo can get at least 2 rounds to work with it would greatly improve your chance of survival in a SD situation. The Circuit Judge is another good candidate and gives several rounds without having to reload. Just pull the trigger.

If you are worried about recoil and really don't want a larger gauge, I would suggest you buy a pump action 410. I would the suggest pulling off the butt plate and put as big a bag of lead shot as you can fit inside it. The extra weight will make a big difference in the felt recoil. Personally, I would rather shoot a heavy 12 gauge than a light 410.

Of the three you mentioned,,,
I would go for the 410.

But, I can't think of any worse choice,,,
Than a single shot anything for self defense.

Remington 1100 in 410 should fill the bill nicely in that regard

I don't know the degree of your disability or your budget, but I would think of a Ruger 10/22.
They are quite reliable with good .22 LR like MiniMags, and hey, if it doesn't get off all ten, it is still probably better than a single shot.

The TriStar G2 410 has been peaking my interest lately. I just haven't found one locally to handle.

I have found that the Hornady Critical Defense 2 1/2" 410 Triple Defense rounds do quite well out of my Mossberg 500 with 26" barrel and my Mossberg Shockwave. They are loaded with a 41 cal. FTX slug and 2 pellets of 000 buckshot. I also reload my own 3" shells with 5 pellets of 00 buckshot that does well out of both guns. I definitely feel comfortable using a 410 for self defense.

I have a Stoeger .410 side by side that is short, light and handy. Unfortunately I don't know whether it's still being made. I bought the last one a Cabela's store had, you might be able to find one somewhere. I would not choose a single-shot anything for home defense if I had any other choice.

If you are not familiar with the handling of firearms, simpler is better. A single shot is way better than no shot, and even a single shot with practice can be reloaded in only a couple seconds. It would be highly advisable to have someone who is familiar with firearms get you out to a safe place to practice with handling and shooting whatever your choice is. If that isn't possible...honestly, probably a Tazer or something similar is a better idea.
That said, H.Koons at least used to make what they called a "Snake Charmer" which was a short stocked relatively short single shot .410 with a synthetic pistol grip type barrel essentially made for carrying in "snaky" country. It would seem like in your situation it would work well.
Myself, even though I have everything from Colt 1911s and pump guns, etc. at my camp which my extended family use, there is a single shot .410 with a couple of the self defense loads nearby for any visitors who may find need for it. Super simple, super reliable. One glance and you can see if the single barrel is or isn't loaded. Pull back the hammer, and it will be ready to fire.

I'm a PE Specialist who works with students with gross motor delays or who have a disabilty.
It would help to know more about your disability in order to give the best possible response.

For those recommending a .410.........recoil is not that much different than a 9mm or .45 carbine.

I'll wait on a reply from the OP telling us more about his disability. A wheelchair user has different issues with a firearm than an amputee.
In any event I would be hard pressed to recommend any single shot firearm for home or personal defense.
