Hello
I have been away from the forum for a very long time. Got extremely bust with recent appointments that have also kept me away from my hobby and in an environment where carrying handgun was not an option. Now...back after a while rusty a bit I am looking at my collection and its a bit hard for me to decide what to carry on daily basis. I am not as young (mid 40s) and look for convenience as well as protection. I do have daily engagements where I end leaving gun safe secured in my vehicle. Not in carry friendly environment all the time. The choice I have to make is among Glock 19, DW Vbob, Python 4" and HK P30. What is your advice?

First of all, welcome back!

Let me boil this down to (what I see as) its essentials:

When I see "not carry friendly enviroment," I think offices, schools, gov't buildings. And if you're going to have to leave your gun in the car, I'd go G19. Everything on your list is perfectly serviceable, and in the event that (Heaven forbid) the car is broken into, the G19 will be the cheapest to replace.

With all of that said, I don't know exactly how long you've been away, but there are some fine new pistols on the market, and going for very reasonable prices these days. The subcompact market is booming like never before.

Lots of different ways to go nowadays with your choice of guns for concealed carry. As Spats pointed out the Glock 19 is a solid performer and readily replaceable should something happen to it; your Dan Wesson V Bob, Colt Python, and HK P30 not so much so. There are also much smaller guns on the market now (SIG P365 and SA Hellcat), that can carry quite a few rounds in their magazines and might be easier to conceal. I would say find a range were you could possibly rent some of the newer guns or else attend a local gun show for the opportunity to at least check out some of them.

And welcome back to THR!

I agree with Spats. Glock 19s are a dime a dozen and if you are forced to leave your carry gun in your vehicle on a regular basis, and your vehicle is broken into, it'll take you no time to replace it.

And the Glock 19 just plain works for concealed carry. That's coming from a guy who doesn't like Glocks.

If buying a smaller gun is or becomes an option, there’s lots of good options out there.

I vote small revolver, as in J-frame Smith or Charter Arms Undercover. Either can be dropped in a pocket, easily carried, do not print like a semi-auto and are sufficiently powerful.

The element of surprise must be preserved. To do that you need to be armed and well concealed. To be armed at all times, carrying has to be convenient. Pocket carry with the right firearm is that, no fooling with complicated holsters or 'rigs' every time you change clothes. Drawing the piece when seated is the big drawback to pocket carry, so it's a compromise.

To be concealed, no one should know you have a gun on you. With pocket carry, the semi-autos print readily unless you wear baggy pants. OTOH a small revolver won't reveal itself even under moderately tight jeans.

My 'collection' was a lot like yours, carriable but mostly too big for either convenience or easy concealment. Opted first for small SAs (G43, Shield) but hated the print in the clothes I wear. Ended up going with snubbies.

Whichever one you shoot the best. Presuming it is reliable, you will carry it and can do so safely.

If everything else is a draw then and only then I would I default to capacity.

I have acquaintances that carry 1911's because they shoot them better, another that carries a .380 EZ because that's what she shoots and runs best and others that carry a revolver because it's what they trust themselves to carry. All are the right answer for them.

Of the four candidates, the G19 will be the easiest to conceal. Because I'm small in stature, my personal choice would be something smaller such as a Sig P365 or even a pocket pistol like a Kahr CW380.

Do you live in a state where open cary is legal? I have a conceal carry license but live in a state
where open carry is illegal so my carry piece has to remain hidden. I am small so
I can not easily conceal any fat polymer framed gun. My carry pieces are either
my Walther PPK or my old early 60's Beretta Puma. I am of the philosophy that
with a carry gun, the most important thing is that it is reliable and
both these small pistols have proven very reliable for me and are
easy to pocket carry while remaining totally concealed. But, again,
it depends on your state's laws. If we had open carry, I'd probably prefer
to carry something like my Colt Trooper MK III in .357 mag.

I'm curious about this. To the best of.my knowledge concealed just means covered. Does your state have language that prohibits printing?

I'll also jump on the 19 train. If you want something smaller and lighter and you like Glocks, then the 43x.

They are kind of specific about it not showing. They don't specifically say anything about printing.
But, for me, something like my Colt Trooper MKIII would be impossible to totally conceal on me.
I am in the South and it is too hot to wear big heavy clothing. We are talking jeans and T-Shirt country so
what ever I carry it has to conceal pretty much completely in a pocket. I am physically small.
No gut.. 5'8 at a tad over 140 lbs with an athletic build so there is no wiggle room
to hide anything much bigger then my Beretta Puma or my Walther PPK. Still, within
20 yards, I am a pretty deadly shot with those two old guns. If we could open carry, I would
prefer a revolver like my Trooper MK III or my S&W 29. Those two have a way of just screaming
"NO" to a would be assailant.

I would go the 19 also, according to that list. Cheapest to replace is car is borken into. Besides the HK, all have low round counts.

G19 for all the reasons mentioned but biggest being ease of concealability and many options for carrying higher cap mags. I can easily IWB mine and carry 2 21rd pmags. Gives me great comfort

Glock 19 seems the choice for me here.

The VBob is actually easier for me to conceal and I carried one for years, but the weight eventually got to my back for daily carry, so I have to settle with something lighter.
