Extra ammo while carrying

One needs to carry at least one reload for whatever you're carrying.

I prefer, in order, speedloader (on belt), speedstrip in pouch, or 2x2 pouch. I don't like the idea of a speedstrip loose in a pocket. You will eventually pull it out of your pocket and find 1,2, or more rounds came off the strip and are loose in your pocket. Not something you want happening when you need ammo.

I carry a gp100 most days iwb at 3 o'clock, as well as two speed loaders in my left front pocket. I am mostly on the farm, and far from the house. I am less worried about being attacked as I am more worried about predators. We have small fowl and livestock, and are not running a grocery store for the local critters.

I carry the same thing when I leave the farm out of convenience. I have other handguns I can carry, but none have the versatility of a 4" revolver.

Was just curious for those who carry a revolver as an EDC, how many of you carry extra ammo with you?

One of my EDC's is a Ruger SP101 and currently don't carry any extra ammo with me.

Same goes when I'm carrying a pistol too.

During the winter (coat season) I will periodically carry a 5rd .44spl CA Bulldog in my coat pocket.

I also carry an additional 5rds of .44spl ammo in my opposite-side coat pocket ... in a 2nd CA Bulldog. ;)

If I only ever carried the one, I would have a speedloader in the opposite-side pocket and/or a 3x3 on my belt.

I have six extra rounds in loops on a belt slide, making for an incredibly slow reload. I have occasionally carried speed-loaders or moonclips, but those are so bulky (and delicate, in the case of moonclips) that I rarely do it anymore. If I really felt the need for lots of ammo I would carry an auto, but honestly, I figure the odds of needing to reload during a gunfight are awfully low, at least for me.

I generally carry a semiauto and always bring one spare magazine in my pocket or a belt carrier. When I have the urge to carry one of my SD revolvers, I bring one speedloader in my pocket. I've tried speed strips and I just find them too fumble prone for me. YMMV.

I carry an lcp in a pocket almost constantly, but when I plan on going out I usually throw on my g2c in 40 IWB. Sometimes I carry an extra mag on my weak side, but my mag pouch is kinda bulky. I often just carry both guns since the lcp is about the same size/weight/hassle as the extra mag can be...

When I do carry a revolver (vintage stainless Charter Arms Undercover), I do carry 18 rounds of extra ammunition.

But, it won't fit the revolver. It's split between the seven-round magazine in the Kel-Tec P32 that's also along, the gun's chamber, and a spare ten-round magazine tucked into my jeans' "watch" pocket.

Personally, I carry at least one extra moon clip. I have room for more and sometimes carry them.

I know there will be people that argue that reloads in non-law enforcement contexts are exceptionally rare, and there are other people who will argue the need to be prepared for worst-case scenarios that could call for multiple reloads. There are already many threads of pages and pages on this subject.

Carry what you like. For the Walter Mittys and their runaway imagination, there should be nothing less than two full-size guns. Why have spare ammunition but no spare gun? And why would a "backup" gun be diminutive when situations that call for a backup are certainly the worst possible rather than those easily dealt with by an inferior gun? Two full-size, or you're compromising based on the belief that you won't need them.

One of these days, I may find a speedloader pouch that works well. In the meantime, it's 2 speed strips in the front pocket.
Try wedging the speed loader on your belt -- shove it down so 3 rounds go on the outside, and three on the inside. For greater security, a small strap with a snap or a stud goes down behind the speed loader, comes up over it and snaps.

I do not normally carry a reload for my small EDC revolver. That being said, I always keep a few loose rounds nearby in my vehicle and travel bag. So I'm never far from some more ammo, and I like that it can be loose ammo and no mag is necessary.

If I am in the woods or otherwise feel the need for more ammo, I might carry an extra cylinder or two worth of reloads loose in my pocket. I find traditional speed loaders to be bulky. Might try the strips if I ever run across any.

I have been seriously thinking about carrying some kind of BUG/2nd gun lately. Likely a second lightweight revolver.

I admire your optimism.

Even on days when the sun shines, the birds sing, and I feel good about life, and consider every stranger a friend I haven't met, I still want three spare cylinder fulls.

With a semi-auto two spares magazines on my person generally satisfies me.

Agree totally. I'll occasionally not have reloads on me but theyll still be only a few hops away. I have 8 speed loaders for my 357 Bulldog with assorted levels of 357, 38 spl and even snake shot. I keep a pouch of loose ammo too which I'll also bring along when I anticipate having a long day driving around and having to be in a number of scenarios. In fact when I travel I often prefer to bring a revolver for the versatility, adaptability and simplicicity of the whole setup. if I travel to a state which has full and equal reciprocity with my state and I will sometimes even bring both, especially if I expect to be hiking or camping. I've also made 3 speed loaders my standard, but if close to home or just running an errand I'll bring along one. oh yeah... then there's the box of 50 I have under the seat in the car at all times.

And there really is no limiting principle. For every guy who thinks his set-up is adequate, there will be another to tell him he's got lace in his panties and is practically asking to get killed in a gunfight.

I get mildly annoyed with the folks who insist that you have to have xxx as a minimum gun/load/backup/whatever. Folks should be let alone to do as much or as little for their personal defense as they want.

Vern I have speedloader pouches pouches that are designed to be worn this way.

To those who say, "I have extra ammo not far away" well if you need a reload, any place not on you is too far away.

On a related note - any 2nd gun is going to be quicker than any revolver reload.

As stated just above in post #40... it's all in how far you want to take things.
It's a very personal decision.

That's how the holders I wore on the job worked. Essentially, they were nothing more than wide, cupped, leather straps that secured a loaded speedloader with the rounds split over the top of the belt as mentioned. They had a much slimmer profile than the outright barrel-shaped pouches that were also common.

I keep a .25 acp in my pocket in addition to my carry gun. While a very weak round it is better than harsh words.

I am a believer in BUG. I got that I stilled in me being trained by Jim Cirillo. Just trying to answer the OP'S question..

IMO you need a reload for your BUG too.

I've been carrying 2 guns for over 45 years.

The worst that could happen is several extremists with rifles in a crowded arena. If their intent is killing, you could never have enough of anything, including steel plates. We could all live several life times and never walk into this scenario.

BUT, this sort of B&*#$H1t is happening more now than ever. I like to have an extra magazine and a BUG on me. It might just buy enough time to neutralize a bad guy or just get out. Most scenarios won’t need 5 rounds but if you can carry extra ammo I think it’s a great idea.

I don’t carry a revolver but if I did I would have at least one speed loader (or two) and also speed loaders spread everywhere around me. In the glove box, lunch box, tool box, junk drawer, coat pockets, wife’s car, at work. It’s all just insurance.

I have never seen a grip like that!
They are from Ergo, the ERGO DELTA GRIP (https://www.ergogrips.net/shop/delta-grip/). They are truly one of the ugliest grips I have ever seen. I resisted using them for quite a while but a friend let me try his and despite how ugly they are they are very comfortable, if a bit weird at first, in the hand. They really do increase the comfort shooting a J-frame. They make 38 Special +P feel like moderate 38 Special loads. As much as I hate 357 Mag aluminum J-frames I would be tempted to try one again with this grip as it really does make that much difference. But they are ugly ugly ugly.

As a left handed person, I find there's too much of the revolver going back and forth hand to hand to eject cartridges and perform a quick reload.

I was glad when we went from 5 shot revolvers to the Glock 26, more than twice the capacity of a stronger round. Oh, and easier reloads.
