I came down with Pneumonia (GF has it) or the flu or something last Friday and missed out on hunting and when my buddy called and asked if I wanted to go out one last time yesterday before season ended I said yes.
We started off with his 1yo beagle and pushed a patch of woods we usually get one race out of and nothing. He did find a pretty nice deadhead that I have no idea how the person didn't find. The entire deer was found laying on a pile of down trees. I didn't feel like carrying it so I left it lay. After about 30min we decided to go ask a farmer to push his woods and field and he said yes. We started out walking some very tall grass and kicking bushes while the dog worked. I walked over and kicked a pile of brush and out shot the rabbit. The dog tracked it for about 8-10min and lost it in a hole. We walked around there some more and just way too many holes. We then decided to head to larger farm with some bushy creek bottoms and ridge tops and had a pretty fun time there.
Arriving at the other farm we headed behind the house and onto the brushy ridges and the dog found a rabbit. He tracked it for awhile but we never saw it. I could hear it in the brush but there is alot of farm cats and visibility was maybe 30yards. We began walking some more and I spotted it just ahead of us. My buddy put the dog on it and the race was on. Down the hill, along the river, up the other side and my buddy yells its coming my way. I run down the hill and in one swoop jump the little creek and here comes the rabbit right at me. Man is this thing moving! It runs between my buddy and I and up the hill in front of him where he cuts loose his Remington 28ga auto loader. The dog found the rabbit for us and we moved on. We hiked further and further in and began using it as a scouting trip for deer hunting and found some great ground. We decided to make our way back to the field edges and my buddy and I began kicking bushes and out shoots another rabbit. I call the dog over but he wants nothing to do with it, probably because he's tired. We make our way back to the ridge tops and I tell my buddy lets get him on the rabbit I lost earlier and sure enough I take a few steps forward and there goes the rabbit. The dog raced the rabbit for several minutes and then into a large dirt mound full of holes.
We headed to another farm and decided to try our luck there and walked probably a good mile and not a single rabbit. Going back to the truck the dog hit a track and was gone. 150yards out he chased it into a giant pile of junk and couldn't get it out. It was at this point we decided to call it a day and wrap up our 2020 season. Hurry up woodchuck season!
