I apologize. I gave you the wrong info on the model with the hammer. I was looking at several guns and got two mixed up. Your gun with the hammer is a .38 Double Action 3rd Model.
These were manufactured 1884-1895 Serial number range from 119001-322700. 3.25" Barrel and it does have correct grips. Sorry for the mix up. It really is in great shape to be well over 100 years old. Amazing they made over 200,000 of this model alone.

No need to apologize at all. I realize that you are taking a lot of you personal time doing this for the community and I really appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time to clarify. It really helps me a lot.

Thanks for the kind words. I really enjoy it. The older guns like you have are really something I don't know as much about as I would like, so it gives me some education as well.

Please help with born on date.

S & W Mod.27-3
.357 Magnum
6 Capacity
Adj rear sight
Serial # AVA 5943

Thanks in advance for your help!
Ed LeBlanc

Looking for a year of manufacture please.
Model 37 Chiefs Special Airweight
.38 special
2 inch barrel
Fixed sights
5 shot
Round butt

Serial No. 253xxx
I found a clue in the original box. The manual has a parts list and it says all prices good as of 1960. Minimum order 50 cents. Lol.

That's actually a good clue. The serial numbers are vague in that era. Closest I can get is 1960-61

Hello and Thank you for this forum and all the good information. Would appreciate a timeframe for a 617-6 I've just acquired.

a) 22LR
b) 4"
c) Round
d) 10
e) front-fixed, rear-adjustable
f) DJD6447
g) 617-6
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

Thank you very much.

It was shipped after 2015 for sure. In 2015 the prefix numbers were still in the CXX rangeland that is the last published prefix. If you have the box, you can figure it out by the end label, but I would guess probably 2016-2017

Thank you Eddie. Can you point me in the right direction or describe briefly how to use the end label? I have the original box.

Thank you very much!

I think I have got some directions on how to read the ship date on the label, but they are packed up for a gun show this weekend. When I get home Sunday, I'll post the directions for you

You have what is officially called a .38 Military and Police Post War or commonly called a Pre Model 10. Probably shipped late 1945 or early 1946. The grips are not original. Original Grips would be the same type Magna grips, but would have a diamond around the screw hole.

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...

Thank you in advance for help in trying to determine the year of manufacture for our Model 500 Serial # DAT89XX

Being new, it would be nice to have any other related information that members may be able to provide.

There is nothing in the SW Catalog that new. If you have the box, then you can figure out the ship date by the end label. Look at the post about 4-5 previous to yours and there are instructions on how to read the end label and figure the date.

I picked up a couple today.

6 in barrel
38 Spl
Six round
198158

3 in barell
32 Long
Six round
156723

Really appreciate your efforts here!!

I think I have these nailed down
38 M&P Model of 1905 3rd Change
Produced from 1909-1915 with a serial number range from 146900-241703.
I would guess around 1912

32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903 5th Change
Produced from 1910-1917 with a serial number range of 102501-263000
I would also guess this one from around 1912

I think I have the information correct, but someone with better knowledge of the earlier models could have better information.

I really appreciate it. This is the second 32 I have but the first 38. The 32 shows it’s age, but the 38 looks like it’s never been fired. If someone refinished it, they did a phenomenal job. Very little wear on the grips as well.

Any idea when Smith dropped putting “ctg” on the caliber markings?

Thanks again.
