What difference does it make - HP vs. Glock

The BHP is a great gun, but come on, for a duty sidearm it is hard to beat a Glock. Glock 17s aren't going anywhere, parts are cheap and everywhere, they are simple to clean and maintain with a super simple fieldstrip, and they just work.

All true. And if you have bigger hands, Glocks don't chew your hand up with hammer bite. Still like my HP though.

Another thing to note; I recall when the British switched to the Glock 17 from the HP they were happy that they could carry with a round chambered. At first I thought that was odd but I'm thinking their old guns didn't have a firing pin safety, so weren't technically drop safe.

Do the military issue G17s have a thumb safety, or is it the same off the shelf G17 as in any gun store?

US Military does not issue any Glock model in large numbers. They are on the approved list for some units, but not a by and large firearm like the M9 or M17. Glocks can be made with thumb safeties.
