Movie thing..?

My all time favorite movie. The "Redux" version, clears up, some unanswered questions. I may watch it again, this afternoon, for the 1003 time. I also, tap all magazines, rifle and pistol, before inserting. Strange how the military training, will always stay with you.

Oh yeah, re the OP, we were told in Boot Camp (PI, '80), to tap the mag to make sure the top round was seated fully back in the magazine, so it wouldn't catch or get dinged in the mag well when inserted.

Like others have said, I was taught in the Marines to tap the mag against my helmet before loading it in the rifle. So when we started the work up for our first deployment and started training with Zodiacs, we didn’t wear helmets because of the weight. It hurt the first time I smacked a loaded mag against my head, not thinking about it....

I taught myself to smack it against the hand guard, since it’s right next to the magwell anyway.

My dad was a gunner in a Huey before reupping and becoming a crew chief on a Chinook for 2 further tours.I think he was 101st Airborne turned Air Assault , so he had both patches, 200 bn Headquarters Supply, the fleet was called "Flying Pachederms" with an elephant on the rear rotor mastand his usual was called "Up, Up; and Away", with some balloons painted by the door.....any ways they had various weapons, M-60's, sometimes mini guns, and the occasional 50cal "Stingers" on the back ramp. He was stationed mostly at Eagle Beach near Danag and Hue. 1967-71 I think. He also mentiond that for a short time he help arm and clean other Chinooks that were called "Guns a Go Go" ........... Chinooks up armored with cannons, .50's and an auto grenade launcher..........outfitted with all kinds of weapons, in a different outfit, but stationed next to them on the beach.

Ever notice R.Lee Ermy "Gunny" was the pilot of the Huey bringin' Duval and Sheen to the beach?

A good and sorely missed friend was in the Guns a Go Go aviation unit. Told some wild stories about it.

I do it, and my AR's don't malfunction. It makes a very noticeable difference on my 300AAC using GI mags, and .30 M1 Cabine bullets. I also do it on 1911 mags. My AR10 mags actually require it unless totally filled or they get follower tilt. I think this dates to the time anti-tilt followers were not around, and people were in the habit of under loading mags. If you don't fully load a magazine the springs can herniate forward, and cause misfeeds, at least on 3 brands of AR10 mags I have seen.

So rapping the mags against your helmets will not cause bullet set back?

If tapping a mag against your helmet caused bullet set back then dropping the box of ammo would cause set back, much less the feeding of the ammo into the chamber.

Try this. Take some .223 or 5.56 ammo and place the bullet against something hard. Now push. Let us know when you get bullet set back.

Few people know this, but the main reason for tapping the mag on the helmet was to remind new recruits to have their helmet on since in the heat of battle they often forgot to put it on.....really....true.....

GRIZ22, you are tough man. I still remember gagging, seeing the amount of grease in the can. That was it for me.
Those "pork" patties always looked like disks of grease to me. Ham and limas were, well, ok...We'd have the C rations when on boat crew duty but would heat them on the engine block.
Some were so old the cigs were Chesterfields... o_O

My hat is off to both of you guys. I was in Germany, we heated the cans up, on the generator exhaust manifolds. I learned fast during my first field exercise, bring your own can food. Now the best, there was a guy in our Co., that lived off post with his family. On payday, he would head to the commissary and buy cases of C-Rations to feed his family. Good Grief.....!!!! He was doing the best he could do, Bless his Heart.

Poor family, especially if there were kids. I hated C-rats. I know people complain about MRE's, but they HAVE to be better!

As bad as that stuff was, I still kept a P-38 handy on my dog tag chain. lol

Since we're talking about banging magazines to aid in feeding, why did smokers do that to cigarette packs?

Now if we could just Hollywood that you have to rack the charging handle on Ma Deuce twice in order to ready the gun for firing. Or any Browning machine gun, for that manner. I have lost count of the number of times some Hollywood idiot places a belt of ammo in a Browning, closes the cover, racks the charger once and then starts shooting.
