I picked IMR4895 and Varget. I use IMR4895... it is the Unique of rifle cartridges, IMHO, and can be used in almost anything. I don't use Varget, but if there is a rabid, foaming at the mouth fan club of rifle powder... Varget would probably be it.

Personally, I'd like to see IMR3031 on the list... I use it more than IMR4895 in my particular case, but you could literally put every rifle powder extant on that list and there would be someone saying 'hey, what about this powder?'

I read the other thread. During the early / mid 90s my wife and I owned a brick and mortar gun shop as a side business experience. Reloading supplies were my niche along with the used guns. With a small business you sure do not have the buying power of the big box stores but here in the Greater Cleveland Ohio suburbs no big box guys were selling reloading supplies. To avoid S&H and HAZMAT fees I bought from a major distributor about an hour down the road and as we did more and more with them prices dropped.

Rifle powders I went with the popular by caliber along with caliber popularity. Obviously powder like IMR 4895 was up there but I had another niche. My outdoor range was Kelbly's Range which is a popular range for bench rest shooters and bench rest large competitions. Now at that point in time VihtaVuori was the powder of choic VihtaVuori was imported exclusively by KalTran Pettibone at the time and George Kelbly bought exclusively from them. George gave me a hell of a deal and his range was the only place to get the stuff so I started buying from him. Again, no HAZMAT fees. So with the popular powders I also carried VihtaVuori line for handgun and rifle. The success was in trying to stock the popular stuff. There was also a niche for the black powder substitutes. With powders back in those days if you couldn't get the powder you loved you loved the powder you could get. Today it's just point, click and in a day or two my powder shows up. There was no point and click. :) Today I can shop the internet among reputable sellers, compare pricing and buy whatever I want.

I'm a Varget fan for sure. Unfortunately, it seems to be among the more difficult powders for most retailers to keep in stock.

What two pistol powders would you like to see in a gun shop?

If I have to be limited to just two then I want Winchester 231 and Alliant Unique.

That is in the original thread if you can find it. I made a typo in making this poll. The last option clarifies this.

Just carry one full line and know about the product. If someone needs powder and you know the product that you carry and a good load with that product, better than being out of stock on varget and not knowing how to help the customer. I would shoot ar comp for varget and in a pinch shoot tac. Being helpful and knowledgeable is just as important.

I did same.
