Any reason feral hogs are skinned rather than scraped as domestic hogs are. I only ask as until perusing these pages I never knew pigs were skinned.

On the Ohio farm I was raised on hogs were always rolled around in a large trough of hot water then scraped clean. A commercial processing plant owned by a friend even has special rollers with rubber fingers that did the job. Pork skins after rendering the lard yum. Pork skin on slow smoked butts or smoked front shoulder in a boiled dinner. more yum. :)

Scraping requires very hot water. We always dipped the hog in a barrel of boiling water, pulled it out and scraped the hair off. That method is very time consuming. i can skin a wild hog in 25-30 minutes. Our hogs are processed ay a commercial butcher shop, Oklahoma law requires that wild hogs be skinned before they be put into the cooler. Several years ago we heated the water, scraped and field dressed a big hog for a high school prom.

Man I wouldn’t have guessed that was a sow. Sure it didn’t just self identify as one?

That sow had never born a litter nor was she pregnant. She was probably three years old.
