A friend and neighbor of mine and I are both retired and able to peruse local gun shops at will. He is an avid smith collector. At any rate there's a Cabelas 10 mins. away and my buddy goes there 3-4 times a week. He called me last night and told me the gun dept was packed with customers and handgun ammo was all gone. They had recently put up additional shelving and loaded it with 9mm. All gone now. I'm currently devoting all my funds to my dentist and am avoiding guns and ammo purchases. Is there an ammo shortage in the wind?

My local range which is also probably the most popular gun shop in my area was as crowded as I have ever seen it. I plan my trips to the range during off hours like noon on a Monday and still too long of a wait for me. Seems more of a run on guns and training then ammo. The shop had cases and cases of 9mm and 5.56 piled up. I think there is such capacity now that any ammo shortage would not be as severe.

That's probably everyone from Champaign coming up in a panic after the mayor's emergency declaration. Not sure why, no one is talking about banning gun or ammo sales, not the government anyway. But those are powers that could be exercised under the emergency order so some have taken to the internet to whip up fervor. As far as it being a widespread run on ammo....doesn't look like it. Think this is more of a local thing
As far as gun stores and ranges being busy...yeah I can see that. Kids are out of school, lots of folks working from home, I'm down to go to the range. Actually, if we're off next week (doubt it) I'm definitely going to get some trigger time in

Don't know about other calibers, but 223 is slowly drying up online. I don't see this being as long term as the 22lr shortage was, but I wouldn't be surprised to see ammo be a little scarce in the short term. I bought 300 rounds of 223 last night to get myself back up to where I like to be in case of short term scarcity.

The COVID-19 panic has to some extent spread to guns and ammo. My crystal ball isn't that great, but I don't expect a severe ammo shortage. After the 2008-16 Drought, lots of gun owners (myself included) swore never to be caught flat-footed again.

Toilet paper shortage, thats a new one.
Ammo shortage? Its happened several times before, it should not be a surprise other than maybe those new to shooting (young or not previously into guns).

I'm short on 308 and 6.8SPC ammo, the rest I should be fine for a bit. I'm a little low on 380 and 9mm Largo, only about half a 30 cal. ammo can of each. I have a full 30 cal can each of 9mm, 40, 45, and 223 (all reloaded ammo).

Ammo is definitely being snapped up. Go look at the sgammo site. Shipping delays of up to 10 days. When I looked last night the site was very slow and they were sold out of 9mm ball and a bunch of 22.

Wow just checked SG Ammo. 223 is almost done. Not too long ago they had enough to outfit the 101st Airborne.

Yep. I ordered some 9 ball from them a week and a half ago and they blew shipping by their latest advertised delay even then.

Somehow I suspect I will still be able to buy a few boxes of 762 nagant ammo any time I like, heh.

Local Academy had lots of bare spots on shelves Thursday. Pistol ammo looked like to me. Although 9mm and shotgun ammo was there in abundance.

The people buying and hoarding ammo right now are marginal gun owners. Anyone serious about guns should be well stocked with ammo already.

Panic buying is stupid. Always has been.

Frankly, right now, our critical problems have nothing to do with guns. As a 75-year-old person with an underlying health condition, I'm worried about surviving this spring, not adding to my gun and ammo collection.

People are hoarding everything. It's like black Friday everyday for who knows how long. Glad I have plenty of ammo already so have that covered. My wife couldn't find a chicken or frozen veggies yesterday. 24-7 news cycle is contributing to over reaction. How many times is it necessary to be told to avoid crowds and wash your hands?

it might be certain areas of the country that are going thru this?

here in New England, my gun store is stocked like you wouldn't believe, i know cuz i bought another 1,000 rds of 9 mm myself, and it was like you couldn't walk around the floor area, that's how much they have on hand..however my last visit about 2 weeks ago, i only paid $193 with tax. this past saturday, i paid $214. (with tax) for the same brand and amount) that's an increase of $21.00

even the online store i bought from, the prices increased this quickly as well

Panics are almost always political.

I have noticed since the first of 2020 certain brands of ammunition being out-of-stock. With the extreme anti-gun candidates running for office this year I suspect there is a “silent majority” of gun owners getting ready in case the Democrats win the White House.

Now we have a media that is committed to hyping and lying about the Coronavirus 19 and the economy to hurt Trump re-election chances.

We stopped at Dillons yesterday and it was crazy. We sat in our truck watching one lady chucking a cart full of toilet paper into her car and the shoppers checking out with cart full of T.P.

One would think that having folks buying guns and ammunition will hurt the Democrats.

I am smiling at myself a little for buying 1k of .223 two weeks ago but it is just part of rotating out my old Clinton era stash.

The emergency declaration in Chicago has nothing to with guns and ammo? I would never tell somebody to panic buy ammo but there’s one little problem with politicians;

The Wuhan virus relief bill the Democrats recently submitted had tax payer funded abortion in it!!!! At a time when leaders should be focused on ONE problem, we get special interest BS.

So...... don’t be surprised if Chicago decides to ban guns and ammo sales to somehow protect people in this Wuhan virus crisis.

People swapping ammo for toilet paper

Both panic purchasing binges make no sense to me, but it's definitely happened.

I'm a long ways from out of stock, but have been watching prices the last couple weeks. Last week I could have ordered all I wanted from SGAmmo or TargetSports USA. Had a trip cancel that freed up some funds and figured I'd add to the inventory for the summer. Both sites mentioned plus several others are almost completely out of inventory. It happened incredibly fast.

idly shopped some little bits of 22lr and 38sp ammo earlier this week for no real reason. this time around plain vanilla rimfire and revolver ammo supplies seem ok. my only 45acp and 9mm eaters are ruger blackhawk convertible revolvers and bond arms derringers, and their needs, and all my others, were sufficiently stashed long ago. i learned well some life lessons from the obama era, thank you kindly b. hussein.

The ammo panic started so late that it proves to me that it’s mostly the unprepared. We’ve had over two months of warning about this virus so 2 months ago I bought extra Lysol and bleach. I continued to add to my ammo like I’ve been doing all of 2019. There’s no way I’m buying ammo or Lysol at this time. I might shoot a little less but not paying extra now.

That’s all we can thank him for.
