So this one has me baffled. My 1895 Nagant revolver functions flawlessly in double action. However, when thumb-cocking the hammer the cylinder, moves forward and up, binding the rear belted part of the cylinder against the rear underside of the top strap about 25% of the time. Any ideas about the reason for this would be greatly appreciated.

You do know the cylinder is supposed to move forward, right? This is to provide a gas seal and help out an extremely anemic cartridge. You might want to remove the cylinder from the yoke and check for corrosion under there.

As entropy mentioned, it's supposed to do that. The one big downside to nearly all revolvers is the gap between the cylinder and the barrel, causing some of the gasses to escape its confines and in some cases even causing accelerated erosion of that area, besides a slightly lower velocity and muzzle energy. To avoid that, the Nagant revolver was designed with a feature to avoid that; during the firing sequence the cylinder would be moved forward, creating a gas tight seal between the cylinder and barrel. Thanks to that feature the Nagant revolver is one of the very few revolvers in existence which can be effectively suppressed.

I know it’s supposed to move forward but, in thumb-cocking, its moving up as well, binding the rear of the cylinder against the top strap. I wonder if there’s too much play in the tip of the cylinder pin that inserts in the frame. It doesn’t seem excessive but perhaps it’s just enough to allow the binding. There’s no corrosion and the gun is in otherwise excellent condition.

Well, my hunch was right. The stepped tip of the cylinder pin had significant wear. I didn’t realize how much until I compared it to a replacement I got from a Russian seller on eBay. The cylinder no longer binds on the top strap.

The eBay seller marked the contents as “sewing machine part” on the customs declaration on the package. In Russia, NKVD sewing machine stitches you!
